We’ve been serving Heart of Darkness Brewery at VEx since June, and this one is a little personal for me.

Heart of Darkness was founded in Saigon in 2016. Their taproom is in District 1, about 15 minutes from my family home.

I was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City, so having beer from my hometown here at VEx in Forest Grove means a lot to me.

We carry three of their beers:

Bia Xoài Chanh Dây | Passionfruit Mango Lager

When I created VEx, I wanted to share more than just Vietnamese food. I wanted to share the Vietnam I know and love. The food, drinks, culture, and things you might actually find when you visit Saigon.

Now something brewed 15 minutes from my family home is being served at my restaurant in Oregon.

Pretty cool how life works sometimes.

This is why community matters. ❤️

Last week, someone commented that they would never visit VEx because of the previous owner. They predicted we would fail, criticized our decision to become 21+, and made some unnecessary comments about who they thought our business might welcome next.

We responded because there was one important thing that needed to be clear:

We are not the old VEX.

For more than a year, Dustin and I have been building something completely our own—Vietnamese food and culture, cocktails, 300+ global spirits, hospitality, and a place where people from our community can come together.

But what happened next meant more to us than anything we could have written ourselves.

You stood up for us.

Customers, friends, community members—and even a former owner—stepped in to remind people that today’s VEx is independently owned and deserves to be judged by what we have created, not by someone who owned the business before us.

Running a small business isn’t easy. Not everyone will understand what we’re building, and not everyone has to like it.

But after reading these comments, we were reminded how many people genuinely want to see us succeed.

To everyone who spoke up, visits us, recommends us, brings friends, shares our posts, or simply gives the new VEx a chance:

Thank you. We see you, and we appreciate you more than you know. ❤️

We’re proud to feature Sông Cái, spirits made in Việt Nam that showcase Vietnamese botanicals, flavors, and craftsmanship.

For us, building a collection of 300+ global spirits isn’t just about having a lot of bottles. It’s about giving our guests an opportunity to explore where spirits come from, the people behind them, and the cultures they represent.

Tonight, my husband surprised me with these beautiful flowers from the Wednesday Market in Forest Grove, along with a simple message:

“Anh xin lỗi em. Anh biết anh đã làm em buồn. Anh yêu em.”

“I’m sorry. I know I made you sad. I love you.” Marriage isn’t always perfect, but love is choosing each other again. ❤️

Behind VEx is a real family, a real marriage, and a whole lot of love. Not every day is perfect, but sometimes a few honest words and a beautiful bouquet remind you what matters most.
