James Gate a Proper Irish Pub opened on Folly Beach in June 2015. The original Gate was named after the area off the south quays of Dublin, St. James’s Gate has been associated with the brewing trade since the 17th Century. On 31 December 1759 the lease was signed over to Arthur Guinness for 9,000 years at £45 per year, St James’s Gate has been the Guinness brewery ever since. With a commitment to
locally sourced food, hand-crafted cocktails, and a unique assortment of fine wine, beer and stout we want to be your local. Designed by international designer Benjamin Kay (an English lad with an Irish spirit) and The Teevan family, the Pub boasts an interior of wood, stone, and warm lighting that will become your home away from home. Our ‘secret’ Garden is a pet friendly oasis off Center Street. It features a wood-burning fireplace in cooler months and a sunny European style cafe the rest of the year. A place to enjoy one of our famous Irish Coffees, whether hot or frozen. St James Gate is a place where you could imagine Wilde, Swift and Joyce enjoying a proper pint of plain, belly up to the bar working on their next great literary work or simply having the ‘craic.’ With the windows open and the sea air pouring in, life just got a little simpler, family dinners got a little bit nicer, and that’s exactly what we wanted for our Proper Irish Pub.
