Broadside

Broadside Flint's print-only periodic Broadside.

Song broadsides (sometimes called song sheets, song slips, or slip ballads) were a common and inexpensive means through which popular songs and ballads were commercially disseminated throughout Northern and Western Europe, and the lands colonized by people from these areas, from the sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries. Broadsides normally contained only lyrics, as simple text was much easie

r and cheaper to typeset and print than was musical notation. Thus, whereas sheet music consumers were musically literate and possessed some degree of education and presumably some means, the audience for broadsides consisted of music-lovers who occupied a lower position on the social and economic ladder. Sheet music was sold in music stores; broadsides in news stalls and bookstores, or at circuses, minstrel shows, medicine shows, political rallies, temperance meetings and vaudeville performances. Sheet music was intended to be profitable; broadsides were so cheap that they sometimes functioned as promotional items for merchandisers of various sorts.

Press Release:

DONATIONS NEEDED AT FLINT WATER RELIEF SITE AS DEMAND EXCEEDS SUPPLY

Flint’s Democracy Defense League has established an emergency water relief center at Mission of Hope located at 4618 Roberts Street, Flint, MI 48505. Donations of cases of water are accepted and people in need of water may pick it up between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Pastor Bobby Jackson, who coordinates the Mission of Hope, keeps meticulous records of the quantity of donated water coming in and water being distributed out to individuals who need it. Since the water relief center opened on August 18, 2014, 40 cases of 12-oz. bottles of water plus 31 gallons in various size jugs have been donated, and people in need have made 135 water pickups. Jackson reports that each day at least one person comes in needing water and most days there are 7 or 8 people who come in need of water.

“People who live in the boil advisory areas came because they could not touch their water,” said Jackson. “Some people still come because they are afraid of the water, and some come because they cannot afford to keep their water turned on. It is not our place to judge why these people come in need of water, so we don’t. It is sad when people have to feel judged over a situation that we are all facing together.”

The Democracy Defense League organized in response to the elimination of local democracy and the imposition of one-man-rule in Flint via Emergency Manager.

Flint resident Claire McClinton participates in the League and would like to see additional water relief sites started across the city. “People all over need access to clean water,” said McClinton. “This situation is reaching epidemic proportions, with some residents unable to even touch their water during these boil advisories. If the Emergency Manager is unable to address this public health emergency, then the people of Flint will have to do it ourselves. We urge anyone who can donate water to the water relief center at Mission of Hope to please do so. There is an immediate need for it among too many of our neighbors.”

Here's the deal with Issue #24:

We won't have a completed draft until mid-July at the earliest.

We apologize for the endless delays, but as you all know we are at the mercy of each other's time. Several of us will be going on vacation, and there just isn't time to complete #24 before we bounce.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, July 16 at 6 pm at the Soggy Bottom. We'll see where we stand at that time—as our predictions of publication dates are as credible as the boy who cried, "wolf!"

Anyhow, enjoy yourselves and see you in July!
