As we close the doors to The Cookery and turn the keys of the building over to new owners, we have been reflecting about how we arrived in Fish Creek 44 years ago. We drove a good sized U-Haul truck with all of our worldly possessions, were towing a car, and had Dick’s youngest brother and our Springer Spaniel pup on board.

We had honeymooned in Door County during the spring of 1977 and on the advice of a friend we made during our visit, we decided to make a move here. Hazel helped us locate a business to purchase in Fish Creek, the Blue Willow Cafe. “Door County is going to grow, you should be a part of it,” she said.

We had found our place. A place to build a business, start our family, grow our relationships in the community and have a good life. Through the inevitable ups and downs of business and our life we have found great support for us in this community.

We sincerely thank all of the customers, staff, and friends who have supported our efforts over the years. That support has been precious to us and will continue to be so as we move on to the next chapter of our lives.

It is with many mixed emotions that we share this news. Dick and Carol are retiring and selling the restaurant property. The Cookery will be closing on Monday, May 31st. A new restaurant will be moving into the space and we will be sharing more details after the sale is final. We hope you can join us for your favorite Cookery meal in the next few weeks!
