Sierra Cantabria Crianza 2021
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain

Sierra Cantabria Crianza is the flagship age-classified Rioja bottling produced by the Eguren family of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. While the family is most well known for their single cru classified bottlings, they produce outstanding ageing classified wines from their estate vineyards in San Vicente. While this category is dominated by blends of purchased fruit sourced from many growers across the entire appellation, the Eguren family are one of the few (if not the only) families in Rioja that produce an estate grown and bottled Crianza from a single village - in this case, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, one of the most respected villages for Tempranillo in Spain.
• 93Jeb Dunnuck
A village wine sourced from estate sites in San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Labastida, the 2021 Crianza is all Tempranillo grown in an extreme diversity of soils. Freshness and finesse are the markers of the area, and both are well represented here. Medium-bodied power supports generous, velvety layers of ripe raspberry complemented by an undercurrent of chocolate and wood spice. Pretty, there’s a hint of saline and leather that lead to a lengthy finish.
• 92Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The pure Tempranillo 2021 Crianza, a modern classical red from a great year, shows the power, elegance and freshness of the year, with pristine fruit and very integrated oak after it spent 14 years in barrel, some of them American. It has tension and the elegant tannins from the year. It's approachable and will also be long lived. This is one of the finest years for this red.
• 91James Suckling
Spiced plums, cherries and berries with some licorice. Good acidity makes this medium-bodied Rioja a very drinkable and enjoyable wine. Juicy, medium-long finish with fine-boned tannins.
• 90Vinous
The 2021 Crianza Sierra Cantabria from San Vicente de la Sonsierra was aged for 14 months in French and American oak. The fruit-driven nose presents sour cherry, plum and subtle freshness. It's creamy and full-bodied on the generous, nuanced palate enhanced by the cool vintage.

2024 Filipa Pato "Post Quercus" Baga Bairrada

About Filipa Pato & William Wouters Post-Quercus Baga
During Roman times, wine production in the region of Bairrada (Portugal) was very important and clay amphorae were used to store and transport the wine. The truth is that the name Bairrada (clay) describes the main component of the soils of this area and, therefore, it is normal to find archaeological remains of clay amphorae with which wine was made and transported in ancient times. Inspired by this Roman legacy, Filipa Pato and her husband Willian Wouters have opted for clay amphorae and, consequently, for the micro-oxygenation of wine.
It is from this decision that wines such as Filipa Pato & William Wouters Post-Quercus Baga are born, a single varietal whose name "Post Quercus" (After the Oak Age) refers to a new stage where oak is no longer the protagonist, giving way to clay. Grown from different plots of 80 year old baga vineyards, biodynamic agriculture is carried out and the grapes are harvested by hand at the optimum moment of ripening. In the cellar, the grapes are selected and partially destemmed and then fermented in 500–700 l amphorae with very little extraction and a long maceration on the skins. The wine remains in these amphorae for 6 months. The porosity of the clay creates micro-oxidation, i.e. a technique that allows the wine to breathe and oxygenate naturally. This process helps to soften tannins and improve colour stability.
With the winery's starting point being the production of authentic wines with no frills, Filipa Pato & William Wouters Post-Quercus Baga discovers the possibilities of the native baga variety, a local grape from Bairrada that, following in the footsteps of its ancestors, turns out to be pleasant and pure.
James Suckling 94 pts
Savory and chalky, with aromas of macerated cherries, raspberries, dried cranberries, dried herbs and red flowers. A gush of tart red fruit at first with chalkiness on the palate, refreshing lift and tension. The tannins sneak in at the end and finish fine and integrated. Medium body. Fermented in amphora.

“Super fresh and bright on the nose, really juicy with this kind of spicy note that goes completely sideways and makes the whole thing feel just very slightly bonkers, but I'm having a lot of fun right now. The more that I smell, the more integrated it feels, and it kind of is coming across like a pie spice that's found its way into this completely amphora aged wine. The palate is really lovely and juicy, the spice finding its way on the lingering and lengthy finish. This is medium bodied, bolstered by some moderate+ tannins that the acidity eventually wins the fight over, but definitely it puts up a little bit of a struggle. This is a really fun an enjoyable wine from a varietal you won't likely see outside of Portugal, at least until it becomes the next huge thing and it's all over Paso Robles or whatever. This is great.”

2020 Kale Wines, Hyde Vineyard, Syrah

Your wine hails from the iconic Hyde Vineyard in the Los Carneros nested appellation, planted by Larry Hyde in 1979. With a cooler climate and vines more than 40 years old, this wine delivers a perfect balance of New World and Old World styles. Reminiscent of a classic Côte Rôtie style, this is a bold, full-bodied Syrah that achieves balance through mineral acids and lower alcohol. A true showstopper young with potential to develop to perfection over decades.

James Suckling 94pts
A classy, cool-climate wine from a single vineyard that's better known for chardonnay. It offers deep blackberry, blueberry and black pepper flavors on a rich, supple texture of rounded tannins and a full body. Whiffs of wood smoke, rosemary and sage add tempting complexity. Drink or hold.
Wine Review: This midnight purple colored Syrah from Kale opens with a blueberry and acai bouquet with hints of saddle leather, black cherry, and violets. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied with integrated medium plus acidity. The mouthfeel is balanced, round, very fresh, and mouthwatering. The flavor profile is an acai berry and cedar blend with notes of blueberry and stony minerality. We also detected hints of black licorice, black cherry, and cedar. The finish is dry, and its flavors, acidity, and moderate tingly tannins linger and last for quite some time. We would pair this Syrah with grilled hanger steak or a Sunday pot roast. Enjoy - KWGTP
Winemaker Notes: Dark and inky in color, the wine shows notes of dark fruit, plum, and black cherry, with hints of herbs, spice, black pepper, and a touch of to***co. It’s lively and fruity, showing good acidity through the mid-palate. Savory and a bit umami, smooth and juicy, and dry on the finish.
The wine showcases a deep, inky purple red color. On the nose, there are distinct notes of vanilla, cigar, leather and prune. The tannins offer a velvety smoothness that enriches the luxurious mouthfeel. On the palate, there's a seamless interplay of sweet and savory characteristics. The balanced acidity enhances the overall structure, and the finish leaves a long lasting impression.

2024 Brick & Mortar, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

Winemaker Notes

Just an hour north from Sonoma County is the Anderson Valley AVA, surrounded by redwood forests, bordered by the Mendocino coastline. A mix of certified sustainable and organic vineyards, Anderson Valley is much colder than other areas in California because the valley runs north-west, opening up to the Pacific Ocean. Our Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards in the “Deep End” of Anderson Valley, which is the northern end closest to the ocean. There is prominent marine influence in the region, bringing cool evenings and foggy mornings which create the perfect growing conditions for delicate grapes like Pinot Noir.

Bright and brambly fruits with alpine notes are distinctive in the 2024 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. Beautifully aromatic and boisterous elements blackberries, violets and redwood forest notes frame the deep and luscious palate. Black raspberry and plum flavors combine with cherry blossom and fresh cedar, highlighted by juniper and bay laurel, which are unique markers for Pinot Noir from this region. The wine is a rich ruby color with purple core, and refreshing brightness.
Blend: 100% Pinot Noir

A depth of brambly black and blue fruit dazzles on the well-structured palate of the 2024 Pinot Noir, layered in light bolts of baking spice, forest, and black tea. Balanced acidity keeps it fresh and lively and inviting in its youth. Drink now through 2032.

2020 Copia "The Cure" Central Coast Rhône Blend

Wine Enthusiast
95 pts…There's a purity of fruit to the nose of this bottling, from black raspberry to elderberry and blueberry, with hints of elegant flowers and pepper adding complexity. It's tightly wound on the sip, where fennel frond, pepper and charcuterie flavors enliven the dark fruit tones. (MK)

James Suckling

93 pts…Lovely white pepper edge to the nose with some graphite and stones on top of the red cherries and heather. Really bright and juicy, delivering a medium- to full-bodied palate where there is a lovely red berry, herb and mineral tinge. Excellent length and poise here. 50% syrah, 30% grenache and 20% mourvedre. Very tasty now, why wait?

Vinous
91 pts…The 2020 The Cure is distinctly dark and savory in the glass, with earthy mineral tones and crushed ashen stone offset by plum sauce and cocoa. It's round and juicy in character, with a stimulating mix of brisk acidity and red plums that add a riveting tension. Grippy tannins are left lingering as sour citrus and balsamic spice notes slowly taper off. The cure is a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre, all refined in stainless steel. (EG)

K & L
“If you don't know the wines from Copia yet, after this stunner they'll definitely be on your radar! One of the most dynamic recent projects in westside Paso Robles, Copia draws inspiration from the likes of Saxum, Sine Qua Non, Booker, Denner, Villa Creek etc. The wines capture the power and intensity that Rhône blends from this part of the world can provide, but also have a vibrant aromatic streak and interwoven mineral core. The Cure is 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre sourced from world-class vineyards (Denner, Fulldraw, Kimsey, and John Sebastiano) that combine the richness and power of Paso Robles and Ballard Canyon, with cooler climate energy from Sta Rita Hills. It's a combination that works brilliantly with huge, inky, palate staining, dark fruit upfront, immediately followed by dried herbs, cracked pepper, brambly notes, and crushed rock minerals. Your palate will be left wondering what just hit it! So much fruit and flavor intensity, but also freshness and savory elements that really build complexity and resonating presence on the finish.”

2020 RIZZI BARBARESCO, PIEDMONT, ITALY

Winemaker's Notes
This is classic Barbaresco: notes of fresh fruit and underbrush combine to create Rizzi’s signature Barbaresco elegance and purity. Prominent in the mouth with a lingering longevity on the finish, also portending great ageability. 100% Nebbiolo
RIZZI
Nestled at the very top of the impressively steep, vine-clad hills of the Treiso zone of Barbaresco, the winery’s vineyards were planted as early as the 1960’s in the white marl, calcareous soil typical of this area. An impressive selection of cru Barbaresci is punctuated by the spectacular Vigna Boito located at the peak of the Rizzi cru. The estate is managed entirely by the Dellapiana family with son Enrico as winemaker and viticulturist. Rizzi Winery participates in “The Green Experience” project which mandates guidelines for environmentally sustainable production.

92 Points
An elegant red, predominately cherry, with supporting flavors of raspberry, rose, anise, thyme and mint. Charming and balanced, with a long, licorice-tinged finish. Best from 2025 through 2040.
Wine Spectator, December, 2023

Alba. Just mid ruby. Minerally nose with hints of iron and a suggestion of fennel seeds. Elegant, almost a little light on the palate, becoming more complex and certainly more tannic on the finish. Has the bones to age. 2023 – 2030
JancisRobinson.com, July, 2023

93 Points
A fragrant nose of red berries, spiced cherries, dried herbs, lavender and mild spices. Medium body with fine tannins and crisp acidity. Fresh and precise with balance and character. It’s well-rounded with volume on the mid-palate. Silky texture and a precise, flavorful finish with excellent length. Drink or hold.

The Rizzi 2020 Barbaresco Rizzi shows an etched, focused bouquet that cedes to crushed rose, cassis and dried cherry. It has a guiding note of metal or rust that seems specific to this bottle. The Rizzi cru rises a moderate 230 to 300 meters in elevation with limestone, clay and sand. The wine has a ripe side for sure, owing to the hot vintage, but it also shows a firm and compact quality that Nebbiolo delivers effortlessly. 2024 – 2037
© Wine Advocate, August, 2023

92 Points
Intense, showing plenty of flowery notes with leafy strawberry, liquorice stick and almost citrussy on the finish. Velvety and dusty on the palate with high yet integrated acidity. One of the best-priced Barbarescos. This is the top selection of grapes from different Rizzi vineyards. A truly classic Barbaresco where the absence of menzione geografica is a plus due to the blending of different plots. 2023 – 2030
Decanter, January, 2023

93+ Points
Enrico Dellapiana’s 2020 cru bottling from the vineyard of Rizzi is a superb example of the vintage. Readers may recall that this vineyards sits on the same hillside as Nervo, but with more chalky in the soils here, so that Enrico will often give this wine a year and a half of aging in botti prior to racking it into cement tanks to finish its élevage. The bouquet is deep, ripe and beautifully red fruity in personality, offering up scents of cherries, blood orange, gamebird, a complex base of chalky soil tones, red curry, a dollop of fresh oregano, rose petals and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a sappy core of red fruit, lovely transparency and grip, ripe tannins and a long, tangy and beautifully balanced finish. First class juice. 2035 – 2085

EDITORS’ CHOICE
The aromas of this Barbaresco are like a softly focused black and white photo that has you doing double takes, as dried cherry, black tea and dried herbs entice you into the glass. Tart red-berried fruits that are perfectly ripe shine on the palate while savory spices and forest floor-like notes elevate the wine to the next level as supple tannins dance across the palate. 2021 Smith-Madrone Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon

Decanter 97 pts
From brothers Stu and Charlie Smith comes their 2021 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain, a precise blend of 81.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.7% Cabernet Franc, and 0.4% Petit Verdot. Aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak, with only 1,652 cases produced, this wine showcases the meticulous dry farming of their 15.4-hectare vineyard at a 2000ft elevation, with vines dating back to 1971. The 2021 vintage is yet another testament to their mastery, offering a purity and elegance that define these Cabernets, with impeccable structure for long-term cellaring. In 2021, the tannins are firm, soaring, built like sky-scrapers, yet remarkably well-integrated. The nose offers a beautiful black cherry and red currant potpourri, mingling with pressed wildflowers, sage, capsicum, and to***co leaf. Juicy plum fruit intertwines with a graphite minerality, and while there’s notable density to the fruit, a fine backbone of crunchy acidity imparts a stunning lightness and lift. Readers seeking Napa Cabernets from the 2021 vintage with serious cellaring potential should consider stocking up on Smith Madrone's offerings, as these '21s are true cellar-worthy gems. (JC)
Wine Enthusiast 97 pts
A Cabernet that exemplifies how the variety became so popular: classic, structural, aromatic, and finessed. An impossible find for the price, enjoy now for palate cleansing structure, or continue to age for deeper pleasure. *Editors' Choice*
James Suckling 94 pts
A staunch defender of the restrained, elegant style of Napa reds made in the 1970s, yet with a little more body and ripeness than wines from that era. Tasty, tangy black cherries and blackberries with accents of bay leaves, black olives, cedar and star anise. Firm tannins, good acidity and the potential for aging.
“Coming from the tippy top of Spring Mountain, this Cabernet impresses right out the gate. There's something about wines that are incredibly well-structured, while I figure it's all in my head, I feel like I can actually smell that structure sometimes and this one was a wine that from first scent I knew I was in for something special. Plum-skin , black cherry, and green peppercorns fill the nose until they're all accompanied by berry compote and a little bit of fresh leather. The palate is intense and rich, just an explosion of fruit as the berry compote from the nose mixes with freshly crushed pie cherries with a handful of dried herbs and a single rose petal tossed in. The finish is long with touches of cocoa and little wisps of coffee working with the herbs but ultimately ending with oak spice. This wasn't just a wine, it was an experience and it's one to be had and shared with people you love and care about, or just by yourself if you're feeling truly hedonistic. Have this with that rich cut of steak and fat potato that you've been thinking about, it'll be worth the ride.

Soft, velvety tannins accompany refreshing acidity.
Planted to steep terraces between 1996-1999; 15.21 acres, 14,721 vines. Fruit was destemmed onto a shaker table and berry sorted into open top stainless steel tanks. Peace, Love & Zinfandel Since 1977
Actually, maybe we need to go further back – to the 1960’s – where all things in the Green & Red story really began. In 1968, founder Jay Heminway was living in Berkeley, teaching sculpture at U.C. Berkeley, and right in the eye of the 1960s storm — dead center in the summer of love, of the free speech movement, of anti war protests, psychedelia, and a reawakening of so many to the beautiful and complex world around them.
There were so many things wafting through that fine California air, but one part of this Berkeley movement was a renewed appreciation, among a tight knit group of friends, for local, authentic food and wine. Bob Wax, Patricia Curtan, John Lilly, Alice Waters, and Jay Heminway were a part of this merry group of friends.
Provençal cuisine, with its emphasis on using the freshest local vegetables, herbs and ingredients, found its loadstar at Chez Panisse, opened by Alice. Some of this band helped found Berkeley’s Cheese Board, while others went in different directions.
