The Eureka Live family is mourning the loss of Walter Burrell, who passed away Saturday at 12:30 PM after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Walter, alongside his husband Lee Keating, was a driving force behind Eureka Live during some of its most influential years. Together, they helped shape this venue into far more than a nightlife destination — they helped create a place where people could feel accepted, celebrated, and unapologetically themselves.
For decades, Eureka Live became a home for so many. A place filled with laughter, friendship, entertainment, and unforgettable memories. Walter’s impact reached far beyond these walls and far beyond Eureka Springs. The space he helped build gave countless people a sense of belonging and community that changed lives in ways words cannot fully capture.
Long before many people were willing to stand beside the LGBTQ+ community publicly, Walter spent years on the front lines of the AIDS epidemic caring for, loving, feeding, and supporting those who had nowhere else to turn. He showed compassion during one of the darkest periods our community has ever faced, and that kind of humanity is something that can never be forgotten.
Walter was known for his charismatic personality, sharp and witty sense of humor, unwavering encouragement, and the way he showed up for people when they needed it most. He believed deeply in others and was a source of support, guidance, and love to so many throughout the years.
His legacy will forever live on through every performer who stepped onto our stage, every guest who found joy here, and every person who walked through our doors and felt safe being exactly who they were.
Today, we ask that you keep Walter’s family, friends, and all who loved him in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you, Walter, for the legacy, the memories, and the love you poured into this place and this community. You will never be forgotten. ❤️🩹
