Let us Remember, those who paid the ultimate sacrifice
The moment a service member dies in combat, a solemn process begins. Fellow Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, men and women of the Coast Guard recover their brother or sister with dignity and honor.
Then comes one of the hardest duties in the military.
The notification.
A casualty officer and chaplain arrive at a home โ the home of a mother, a father, or a spouse. It may be at three different locations.
The vehicle stops.
The uniforms step out.
And a familyโs life changes forever.
Let us also remember those who came -home from war- and later died from the wounds and injuries they carried with them, and the families and friends who stood beside them through the fight.
These Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, men and women of the Coast Guard, are more than members of their branch of service.
They are your neighbor.
A son.
A daughter.
A brother.
A sister.
A father.
A mother.
A cousin.
An aunt.
An uncle.
A grandson.
A granddaughter.
A best friend.
Americans have continued to step forward โ generation after generation โ knowing there may come a day when they are asked to fight for something, they themselves may not fully understand.
They do it for people they may never even meet, so they may have:
The freedom to go to school where they choose.
The freedom to marry who they love.
The freedom to buy a home.
The freedom to work for themselves or for someone else.
The freedom to speak openly, worship freely, disagree peacefully, and live without fear.
As we approach 250 years as a Nation, these freedoms exist because American Service men and women before us carried this Republic forward through war, hardship, sacrifice, and challenges.
That is the strength of America.
There is life before the knock at the door.
And life after it.
That is the true cost of freedom.
Now join me in honoring and remembering those who gave their lives for our freedom. Keep their memory alive. Speak of them and what they mean to our Nation.
Enjoy this day with your families, cherish these freedoms, and never forget the price paid by generations of Americans who stood in defense of Our Nation.
God bless our fallen.
God bless their families.
And God bless the United States of America.
