Many people have asked why Guinness posters have a toucan or lion in them!

There’s actually a pretty great story behind it.

The iconic Guinness animal posters trace back to 1935, when Guinness and their advertising agency, S.H. Benson, teamed up with illustrator John Gilroy.

At the time, alcohol advertising regulations in Britain were becoming stricter. Guinness had famously used slogans like “Guinness is Good for You,” but they needed a new way to communicate strength, vitality, and appetite without running into trouble with regulators.

Gilroy visited the London Zoo in the early 1930s and saw a sea lion balancing a ball. He had an idea: What if that ball was replaced with a pint of Guinness?

And just like that, Guinness animal advertising was born.

From toucans balancing pints to lions getting involved, the ads became some of the most recognizable and beloved advertising in history.

So the next time you see one of those old Guinness posters hanging on the wall at Whiskey Reds, you’ll know there’s more to it than just a funny-looking animal holding a pint.

It’s a little piece of Guinness history. Sláinte! 🇮🇪
