The lovely Ring of Kerry….

It is the drive that people travel from all over the world to make, a winding road through some of the most beautiful scenery Ireland has to offer, where every turn reveals another breathtaking view. 🚗 The Ring of Kerry.

The Ring of Kerry is perhaps the most famous scenic route in all of Ireland, a spectacular circular drive of around one hundred and eighty kilometres that loops around the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, in the beautiful south-west of the country. Not a nuisance any more!

It was in the house long before it was an instrument. A wooden hoop with a goatskin stretched over it, hanging on a nail in the outhouse. It carried turf in from the stack. It held the grain while the chaff blew off it. Once a year the men who went out after the wren on St Stephen's Day took it down and beat it up the road.

🥁 Serious musicians did not want it near them. Well into the twentieth century the bodhran was regarded in a good deal of the tradition as a noise rather than a voice, and a session player who could not hold a tune could always be handed one to keep him occupied. The old joke about the difference between a bodhran and a trampoline is that you take your boots off before jumping on a trampoline. Even now the running gag survives in every session in the country, told mostly by people who cannot play one. 🇮🇪

Then the technique changed, and the instrument changed with it. Players began working the far side of the skin with the flat of the hand to bend the pitch while the tipper did the rhythm, so the drum could actually follow a tune instead of flattening it. A maker in County Derry started fitting an internal tuning ring so the skin could be tightened against damp weather. A turf tray that hung on a nail in a shed can now be ordered from a workshop in Ireland and shipped to a session in Tokyo.

Happy Labor Day!

Not everyone wears a suit to build a nation. 🇺🇸

Some wake up before sunrise. Some work through the heat, the cold, the long nights, and the hard days. They build our homes, repair our roads, care for our families, keep our cities moving, and make everyday life possible.

But Labor Day itself has a history worth remembering:

📜 September 5, 1882 — About 10,000 workers gathered in New York City for America’s first Labor Day parade, organized by the Central Labor Union.

🏛️ February 21, 1887 — Oregon became the first state to legally recognize Labor Day as a holiday. Other states soon followed.

🇺🇸 June 28, 1894 — President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making the first Monday of September a national legal holiday dedicated to American workers.

More than a century later, Labor Day is still a reminder that the strength of a country isn't built only in offices or government buildings — it's built by millions of people who show up every day and do the work.

Every job matters. Every worker matters. Every hardworking hand helps build America.

The penny whistle!

The instrument most associated with Irish music around the world was first mass produced by an Englishman and sold for a penny.

Robert Clarke began making tin whistles in Suffolk around 1843, rolling tinplate around a mandrel and fitting a wooden fipple plug, and later moved production to Manchester. They sold in enormous numbers because they were cheap enough that anybody could own one. They reached Ireland the way all cheap manufactured goods reached Ireland in that century, through the shops and the fairs and the emigrant post.

What happened next is the interesting part. Irish players took a mass produced Victorian article and applied to it the ornamentation of the older wind traditions, the cuts and taps and rolls that had been worked out on the pipes and the wooden flute. Within a generation it was not an English novelty at all. It was the instrument a child in Ireland was handed first, and very often the one they were still playing at eighty.
