Two!

Ireland has two national symbols, and they come from two different worlds.

The harp is the old Gaelic one. A harp was already the arms of the King of Ireland on a medieval roll from around 1280, and Henry VIII adopted it for the Kingdom of Ireland in 1541. When the Irish Free State was founded in 1922 it kept the harp, modelled on the Trinity College harp, and it still appears on the coins, the passport and the official seals. The Guinness harp faces the other way, which is why the state registers only the left facing one.

The shamrock is the people's symbol. The first written link between shamrocks and St Patrick comes from 1681, when an English traveller noted that the common people wore them. It became a symbol of Ireland in the 1700s, taken up by the Volunteers and the United Irishmen.

One is the symbol of a kingdom. The other belongs to the people.

Dublin!

☘️ The Brian Boru harp is a famous ancient Irish harp housed in the long room in Trinity College Dublin. It is named after the king and dates from the 14th - 15th century. It's made of oak and willow with 29 brass strings . An absolutely stunning instrument in remarkable condition. 💚🤍🧡
