The Footprints of Charles Hunter 👣 💀

During renovations at Curio’s 205 William Street building, we removed old paneling and uncovered a message written directly on the brick wall more than a century ago.

The faded inscription reads:

“Freshet June 1st 1889. Worst ever been known here.”

Beneath it are notes about bridges washed away during the flood and one final line, just revealed:

“Charles Hunter drowned.”

The writing appears to reference the Great Freshet of 1889, one of the worst floods ever recorded in Fredericksburg.

More than 130 years later, while working alone near the rear staircase, we noticed something strange.

A trail of wet, muddy footprints had appeared on the steps.

Not boot prints.

Not shoe prints.

Bare footprints.

The prints began on the third step from the bottom, as if whoever made them had stepped onto the staircase from nowhere at all. They continued upward toward the second floor and then simply vanished.

There were no footprints below the stairs.

None above.

Just a trail of muddy, barefoot tracks leading upward through the building.

Perhaps there is a perfectly reasonable explanation.

Or perhaps, on rainy nights when the Rappahannock runs high, someone who never made it home from the flood of 1889 still wanders William Street, searching for dry ground.

If you recently passed by Curio and saw us with a big truck and lots of boxes - don't panic! 📦🚚

We're just moving new dishes and furniture into Curio Bistro, which will be located at 205 William Street. Moving Day never seemed to end (and if you ask us, it still hasn't; someone needs to put everything away once it's inside!), but we're finally able to check off another box on the checklist to getting the Bistro open. ✅📝

It may seem like a small victory, but even this step brings us closer to the finish line. Stay tuned for more updates on the new space! 🏁😆

Last chance on this amazing flatbread! 🫡👋

With a feta & ricotta base topped by pickled red onions, blueberries, arugula, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze, it's hard to say goodbye to the delicious Viola Bacca. 🫐🧀🍽️

We will be waving farewell on June 1st to make way for a new flatbread, so make sure to give the Viola Bacca a good send-off. Today is a great day to grab a slice of it along with a glass of Sangria Spritzer to relax in the courtyard. Be sure to try the last of the dozen Italian wines before they are switched out, too! 🍷🇮🇹
