“I should have never doubted Mike. I could not believe it, the brilliant acting icon, the consummate actor, Henry Fonda, was really coming to our saloon. The Dust was packed every night, but when word that Henry Fonda was on his way to the Dust traveled down the boulevard, the place exploded. When “Hank” and Mike arrived, they walked into quite a reception. Everyone wanted to meet this living, walking legend. My life among the Icons by Johnny Ortiz offers an intimate history of the Stardust from the early 1960s throughout the late 1970s. Among the many fascinating stories, it describes how this front-runner (Introduction, p. x) of what is now called a sports bar was a favored watering hole to members of the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Raiders, The Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Anaheim Angels. Many famous celebrities also visited the Stardust including Henry Fonda Steve McQueen, and Robert Mitchum (p. xiii). In research for a new book about the Stardust, we have found many more fascinating stories that we’ll share over the following weeks. Stay tuned.
