BOTÁNICA will be a mixed-use craft cocktail bar and café in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood of Detroit. Its unique concept takes inspiration from the mystery and magic of botánicas—shops that sell plants, herbs, candles, and other mystical products used in Afro-Caribbean self-care and spiritual practices. With its fresh, pan-Latin/Caribbean concept, BOTÁNICA will represent something new for De
troiters: a place to escape the cold, the Midwest, the routine, and enter into a new world entirely. By day, BOTÁNICA will operate as a brightly-lit café, overflowing with plants and greenery. “CAFÉ BOTÁNICA” will serve up world-class coffee and espresso-based drinks, plant-focused, seasonal foods, and the house specialty: yeast donuts topped with tropical glazes. The café will also feature a collection of self-care products—candles, herbs, soaps, smudges, and tinctures. These “apothecary” items will enliven the space, create a forum for local artisans, and communicate BOTÁNICA’S unique, authentic brand. Once the sun goes down, BOTÁNICA’S center of operations will move to a partially concealed bar, separated from the café by a living moss wall. With a darker, more mysterious aesthetic, “BAR BOTÁNICA” will connect patrons to an underground world of spirits in more ways than one. An ever-evolving but always concise cocktail list will focus on rum, tequila, and mezcal, taking its cues from the classic libations of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, México, and the tropics. In so doing, BOTÁNICA will reconnect guests to the Latin American/Caribbean roots of cocktail culture, as well as to the “healing art” of the cocktail, the original application of which was to imbibe the medicinal properties of plants. Cocktails will be served with overflowing edible flowers, herbs, fruits, and other garnishes, making each drink a feast for the eyes and the palate. Great cocktails require fresh, high-quality ingredients and a commitment to craft—not mustaches, suspenders, or the pretense of many cocktail bars. We’ll create an inclusive environment for all patrons, and place a premium on sharing our knowledge of and passion for cocktails, spirits, wine, and more. Owned and operated by women of color, BOTÁNICA’s mission is to create a vibrant, inclusive social hub that honors the traditions of Afro-Caribbean, Latinx, indigenous, and other peoples; to become a flashpoint for redevelopment in Jefferson-Chalmers; to attract visitors from surrounding neighborhoods and cities; and, of course, to serve fresh and delicious food and beverages at reasonable prices. We are competing in the Comerica Hatch Contest to spread the word about BOTÁNICA and to raise funds for an ambitious build-out of our space on Jefferson Avenue. Our stunning design includes plans to install a living moss wall, refurbish and extend an existing light-well to act as an indoor greenhouse, and to install a mural on an exposed exterior wall. Help us execute on this vision by voting BAR BOTÁNICA! Let’s drink, feast, and party together on the East Side.
