Bar Botanica

Bar Botanica Craft Cocktail Bar and Cafe
Jefferson-Chalmers, Detroit Product quality and customer experience are our paramount concerns.

BOTÁNICA will be a mixed-use craft cocktail bar and café in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood of Detroit. Its unique concept takes inspiration from the mystery and magic of botánicas—shops that sell plants, herbs, candles, and other mystical products used in Afro-Caribbean self-care and spiritual practices. With its fresh, pan-Latin/Caribbean concept, BOTÁNICA will represent something new for De

troiters: a place to escape the cold, the Midwest, the routine, and enter into a new world entirely. By day, BOTÁNICA will operate as a brightly-lit café, overflowing with plants and greenery. “CAFÉ BOTÁNICA” will serve up world-class coffee and espresso-based drinks, plant-focused, seasonal foods, and the house specialty: yeast donuts topped with tropical glazes. The café will also feature a collection of self-care products—candles, herbs, soaps, smudges, and tinctures. These “apothecary” items will enliven the space, create a forum for local artisans, and communicate BOTÁNICA’S unique, authentic brand. Once the sun goes down, BOTÁNICA’S center of operations will move to a partially concealed bar, separated from the café by a living moss wall. With a darker, more mysterious aesthetic, “BAR BOTÁNICA” will connect patrons to an underground world of spirits in more ways than one. An ever-evolving but always concise cocktail list will focus on rum, tequila, and mezcal, taking its cues from the classic libations of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, México, and the tropics. In so doing, BOTÁNICA will reconnect guests to the Latin American/Caribbean roots of cocktail culture, as well as to the “healing art” of the cocktail, the original application of which was to imbibe the medicinal properties of plants. Cocktails will be served with overflowing edible flowers, herbs, fruits, and other garnishes, making each drink a feast for the eyes and the palate. Great cocktails require fresh, high-quality ingredients and a commitment to craft—not mustaches, suspenders, or the pretense of many cocktail bars. We’ll create an inclusive environment for all patrons, and place a premium on sharing our knowledge of and passion for cocktails, spirits, wine, and more. Owned and operated by women of color, BOTÁNICA’s mission is to create a vibrant, inclusive social hub that honors the traditions of Afro-Caribbean, Latinx, indigenous, and other peoples; to become a flashpoint for redevelopment in Jefferson-Chalmers; to attract visitors from surrounding neighborhoods and cities; and, of course, to serve fresh and delicious food and beverages at reasonable prices. We are competing in the Comerica Hatch Contest to spread the word about BOTÁNICA and to raise funds for an ambitious build-out of our space on Jefferson Avenue. Our stunning design includes plans to install a living moss wall, refurbish and extend an existing light-well to act as an indoor greenhouse, and to install a mural on an exposed exterior wall. Help us execute on this vision by voting BAR BOTÁNICA! Let’s drink, feast, and party together on the East Side.

Today’s team spotlight is on Carla Fernández-Soto, Bar Botánica’s Brand Ambassador, a.k.a. Lisandra's little sister.

Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Carla made the move to southwest Michigan with her family in 1998. She followed in her siblings' footsteps and graduated from the University of Michigan where she received a full scholarship. She spent the next four years working at Voces, a Latinx community center in Battle Creek, MI where she focused on youth leadership development and increasing access to education for immigrant youth. She inaugurated the organization’s Youth & Parent Engagement Program and served as Associate Director. She has witnessed many of her first-generation students go on to secure prestigious college scholarships and become professionals. In 2014, she moved to New York City where she worked at non-profits in development and program management. She is a social media wiz, and she loves to sing, learn new musical instruments, and be outdoors! A certified diver and mermaid, she will soon be pursuing her divemaster certification!

Jefferson East, Inc. said it best: "What makes small businesses unique is that they are so deeply tied to the neighborhoods they are a part of, and they have a special charm that is unlike anywhere else." Shout out to Derric Scott and the entire JEI team for your support of Bar Botánica. We could not do this without such strong community partners.

This week we've been introducing you to the dream team and reminding you that a vote for Bar Botánica is a vote for our brilliant team! Today’s team spotlight is on the one and only, Jason Minor, Bar Botánica’s Lead Designer! You’ve seen his handy work throughout these last couple of weeks.

Jason is a Michigander from birth, spending most of his childhood in Kalamazoo. His obsession with architecture began as a fascination with large cities -- fueled by trips with family to Detroit to visit museums or catch a Tigers game. He attended the University of Michigan, graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Architecture. He was the recipient of the top design prizes in his graduating class and was awarded a scholarship to pursue architectural research in Europe & Central America. His travels led him to Los Angeles where he worked for six years as a Project Designer for Morphosis Architects, an internationally acclaimed firm led by Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne. While at Morphosis, he worked on bold designs for projects located around the world -- Italy, China, Lebanon, and Switzerland, among others (link to his AMAZING portfolio below). On the side, he designs for a clothing line that he helped launch which has been seen on celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Kevin Durant, and the Kardashians. He is currently pursuing a Master of Architecture degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
