> The First Drop

10 days. That’s all we had to get this place ready after the previous owner finally left.
So much black paint. Contractors ripping up floors. Hand-pumping bar fluid out from under the Lounge bar floors. Years of damage to repair. We flipped the stage in the main room to maximize space and built the whole room out like a studio, with floating walls, heavy fabrics, sound diffusers, and more.

November 19th, 2016. Mala, Kahn, Neek, Moresounds, and RECON. By the time the night happened, we were exhausted and in shock. Then the music started, and we knew we had changed the game. It was SO loud the entire building vibrated.

I looked around at everyone in the space who had loved and supported Sub.mission for years, and it was so heartwarming. We were finally home. No more dragging the system around to other people’s venues. We had a spot.

And after that first night? We stayed late, ripped down the side stage, and kept improving. This project has always been evolving.

To everyone who held a paintbrush, a crowbar, or a pump that month: this room exists because of you. Thank you. 🖤

Ten years later, still building.

What do you get when you combine heavy dubstep energy with minimal, dub-influenced sound system aesthetics? The answer is Mikrodot.

His work balances impact and restraint—sometimes aggressive, sometimes meditative, always intentional. With releases on DUPLOC, FKOF, and Artikal Music, and performances across the US, Mikrodot approaches music as a tool for connection, community, and physical experience rather than trend-driven output.

Join us this Friday for his return to the mile high city alongside Salty presented by Sub.mission.

Where It All Began:

Some rooms are just rooms. Some become home.

In 2007, this room, then called Benders, said yes when nobody else would. It was the first venue that let us bring in our own sound system and do it the way we always dreamed.

This was dub plate culture. Before CDJs and MP3s, the tunes lived on vinyl and acetate, cut for one DJ and one set. If you wanted to hear a certain track, you had to book the person who owned it and be in the room. So we chipped in to ship their records across the world, and we brought Hatcha and Benga to Denver. It was the first time international dubstep DJs had ever played this city.

No roadmap. No over saturation. Just a sound system, a box of plates, and a room full of people who needed to feel it. I still get chills thinking about that night.

We didn’t know it yet, but that night was the beginning of everything.

Ten years of The Black Box. It all started right here.

A true selector with an ear for things fresh and exciting, Plastician returns to Denver this Friday courtesy of our friends at Sub.mission.

Most commonly known for his involvement at the humble beginnings of London's Grime & Dubstep movements, Plastician was recognized as the first artist to truly cross the boundaries between the two movements, which he showcased on Rinse FM, and then on BBC Radio 1 in the mid 00's with his popular radio broadcasts.

Support the legends that helped create the culture. Proper vibe incoming, see you in the dance.
