Turkeys Spared At Sutro Shoot
“Where’s the turkeys?” was the cry of the crowd at high noon on November 21 at the annual turkey shoot at Sutro. There was beer, wine, black powder, black powder buffs, M-1 carbine officer guns, .22s with scopes, .45 automatic pistols, rocks, sling shots and BB guns, but no turkeys. “Mullers s’posed to bring ’em,” said J.R., but all Muller could produce was the bullet riddled practice turkey of turkey shoots gone by.
The crowd ambled about in the fine fall weather waiting for the Great Turkey God to deliver but no such luck. “What’s a turkey shoot without a turkey to shoot at?” grumbled the crowd, but the confusion was washed down by beer.
“We can burn a big log until it’s black and then chop an X in it and make that the target”, growled grizzled mountain man J.R. in his hoarsest voice. “That sounds good,” Ray Muller said. “Do it.”
“What, and get my leathers all dirty?” said J.R. aghast.
“Who’s going to take the money and set this thing up?” queried one anxious participant to Ray Muller.
“Not me,” said Muller. “I did it last year and it’s too much of a hassle.”
Some semblance of order was finally found, and dollars and names were taken down. It was decided that whoever won in the pistol and rifle competition would take the money to the store of their choice and buy their own turkey, or whatever else they wanted. Pieces of wood with charcoaled Xs on them were erected and the crowd’s anticipation grew.
The pistol competition was first, and Cliff Sullivan managed to wave the right moment and put his lead bullet closest to the X, winning $14.00. The NEWS later asked Sullivan if he got his turkey and he replied, “No, but I got my drunk.”
The black powder rifle shooters were next, and the competition grew stiff. An amazed crowd gazed pleasantly off in all directions as J.R. splattered the charcoal with his original-original Hawken rifle.
Then everybody left.
