National Cheeseburger Day is today, Friday, September 18, 2026. It’s an unofficial American food holiday observed every year on this date.

It honors the cheeseburger — a hamburger patty topped with melted cheese.

The most widely told origin story credits 16-year-old Lionel Sternberger at his father’s Rite Spot sandwich shop in Pasadena, California, around 1924–1926. He added a slice of cheese to a hamburger (accounts vary between experiment, customer request, or covering a slightly overcooked patty) and sold it as the “Aristocratic Burger.” Louis Ballast later trademarked the name “cheeseburger” in Denver in 1935; other restaurants also claimed early versions.

The usual celebration is simple: eat a cheeseburger. Grill one at home or grab a deal. That’s the whole day.
