Building a bridge across the Mississippi required St. Louis workers to go beneath it.

The Eads Bridge was one of the most ambitious engineering projects of the nineteenth century. James Buchanan Eads wanted a permanent crossing that could carry rail traffic over a river famous for powerful current, shifting sediment and heavy steamboat commerce.

The foundations became one of the hardest problems.

Workers used pneumatic caissons - large enclosed chambers filled with compressed air - to excavate beneath the riverbed while keeping water out.

Men entered through air locks and worked in an environment unlike an ordinary construction site. Pressure increased as the caissons descended.
Then workers began getting sick.

Some experienced severe joint pain, paralysis and other symptoms after returning to normal atmospheric pressure. The condition became known as caisson disease. Today we recognize it as decompression sickness caused when dissolved gases form bubbles in the body after pressure changes too quickly.

At the time, the mechanism was not well understood.

The danger did not stop the project.

The bridge's piers were sunk to extraordinary depths, and the completed structure opened in 1874. Its steel arches were revolutionary, and the bridge became a symbol that St. Louis could connect rail systems on both sides of the Mississippi without depending on ferries.

The achievement came with a human cost.

Engineering monuments can make construction look inevitable after the fact. A finished bridge hides the pressure chambers, accidents, illness and experiments required to put foundations where engineers wanted them.

Thousands of people now cross rivers without thinking about what lies beneath the piers.

At Eads Bridge, some of the most important work happened where daylight never reached.

If you were offered high wages in 1870 to work inside a pressurized chamber beneath the Mississippi, would you have taken the job?

That is why workers built the eads bridge foundations inside pressurized air chambers still matters as more than a historical footnote. The physical setting lets people connect a statewide story with an actual Missouri landscape.
