As I sit here tonight reflecting on the news we got about my daddy (Guy Faulk) on Sunday, nothing prepared me to hear “tumor” or “large mass”. As a good many of you know or you may not, but my daddy has had the onset of dementia for quite a few months now. His long term memory would blow your mind of the stories he could tell you from years and years ago. But to see him struggle to remember what you said to him five minutes ago will break a person’s heart. Going from independent and being able to do the simple, day to day things to struggling just to sit up and to walk is not for the weak. For months now, maybe close to 6-7, my daddy has been complaining of his back and shoulder hurting. It was chalked up by his home care provider that it was his age and arthritis or probably sore from the recent falls he has been having. On Sunday morning, my daddy had a seizure-like episode that prompted us to call EMS for him. His ride lead him to Roper-Berkeley Hospital. As usual and from a few other ER visits, vitals were good and bloodwork was amazing. I am sure the plan was to send him on home. Ah, but not before I requested that they check on his pain issues in his back and shoulder. X-ray showed a tumor near top of his left lung. Not just any typical tumor that smokers would have. This one is a pancoast tumor. As of now, it has spread from his left lung to spinal column to left shoulder and chest wall. Quite possibly in neck area as well. His symptoms? Back pain between his shoulder blades, shoulder pain, neck pain, drooping eyelid and feeling of paralysis in left arm. A pancoast tumor is a slow spreading tumor. The doctor said that he probably has had it for a while. My daddy is 90 and his health has declined even more in the past month. Biopsy could aggravate it and treatments will be too aggressive and surgery is not an option. I made the decision to bring daddy home on hospice. Because I made the decision to not biopsy or further test him to see what “stage” it is, a timeframe has not been determined. From now until my daddy leaves us, it’s about making him comfortable and letting him live how he wants. I just ask that you lift my daddy up in your prayers and to ask that you specifically ask for comfort and no pain and if it’s God’s decision to take him soon that my daddy not suffer and have a peaceful passing. Also, if you are a man and a heavy smoker and have similar symptoms, go get checked. Don’t wait. I never even heard of a pancoast tumor. The diagnosis may not save my daddy but it may be able to educate and save someone else. Daddy is going to be at his house.
