Sterling K. Brown created a fund to help young people leaving foster care build a life after the system.

The actor partnered with the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition to launch the Aralean Brown Older Youth Readiness Fund.

He named it after his mother, Aralean, who was herself a foster and adoptive parent.

The fund helps young people affected by foster care with the practical things that can make the transition into adulthood much easier.

That can include help with education, skilled-trade training, housing deposits, work uniforms and other essentials needed to start living independently.

For many young people, turning 18 does not suddenly mean having a stable home, savings or a family safety net to fall back on.

Brown wanted the fund to help close some of that gap.

And naming it after his mother made the project even more personal.

Her experience helping children in foster care inspired a fund that is now helping another generation take their first steps into adulthood.

Born in Mississippi in 1908, Oseola McCarty left school after the sixth grade to help take care of her family. She never had a life of wealth, but she spent more than seven decades working hard, living modestly, and making the most of what she earned. ❤️

For more than 75 years, she washed and ironed clothes by hand, carefully putting aside whatever money she could. Rather than spending her earnings, she kept them in local banks and allowed compound interest to steadily increase her savings. By 1995, she had accumulated nearly $280,000. 💰

At 86, McCarty made a remarkable choice to donate $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi, creating scholarships for students who might otherwise struggle to afford college. 🎓

Her extraordinary generosity attracted attention around the world, and she was eventually awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal.

Even after receiving widespread recognition, she stayed humble and down-to-earth. Before she d**d in 1999, she attended the graduation of the first student whose education was helped by her scholarship. 🥹

Her story showed that generosity isn't about having the most; it's about sharing what you have and using it to make a difference in someone else's life. ❤️
