Lelia Elisabeth Cady,

August 7, 1959 - June 11, 2026

Born in Falls Church VA as the third (and cutest) of four, Lelia Cady was a rare and special soul. She was named for her great-grandmother Lelia Knockles, and for Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the great suffragist. Living up to that namesake was a tall order that she took on with gusto.

Lelia grew up in Ypsilanti MI and moved to Dayton OH. After settling in Columbus, she became a court-appointed victim’s advocate in domestic violence and related cases. Lelia was a tireless advocate for womens’ rights throughout her life.

It was there she met attorney Don Ruben, the love of her life (except for Bob Dylan, but he didn’t make soup for her like Donnie did). The pair were great supporters of the arts, and of all things that would make Columbus a cleaner, safer, happier and better place. She helped make the North Market happen, and had many friendships with local artists, art galleries and musicians. She was always there at events supporting artists and small businesses, and moved mountains for many people and projects. She supported local chefs and restaurateurs. Lelia avoided the limelight and was always behind the scenes making things happen.

As a City Council legislative aide for Maryellen O’Shaughnessy, Lelia was an irresistible force. When there were things to be accomplished and business to be taken care of, it was often Lelia making phone calls, writing letters, researching and crafting legislation. She was whip smart, charming, persuasive and would always find a way.

Later she helped found Eartha, a food scrap composting venture, with restaurateur and friend Liz Lessner.

Her friends called her Hot Rod. Lelia was a spitfire—funny, sharp and passionate. She had a kind soul and was very sweet to people, but she had no qualms about absolutely obliterating you in a debate if she disagreed with you. She had the legendary Cady dry wit that came from very intelligent parents. A strong, brave ball of fire and a beautiful soul, a class act, an absolute legend. The epitome of cool, and totally nonchalant about it.

Lelia loved music from her early days as a self-described 70’s rock chick, and as a friend and fan to local musicians. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of music, and could always tell you who the best member of any band really was.

She helped many friends get through their personal struggles and tragedies. She was a big wonderful human being in a tiny, mighty, beautiful package. This world is a better place because of how hard she worked to leave it that way. We are saddened by her loss and grateful for her bright light in our lives.

Lelia is preceded in death by her parents Richard and Joan, husband Don Ruben, and brother Mike. She is survived by sister Jennifer (Albuquerque NM) and brother and sister-in-law Chris and Nancy (Columbia MO).

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday July 18 at St. Christopher Church, 1420 Grandview Ave. Columbus 43212. a Memorial Celebration will be held Sunday July 19, 2-4 p.m. at Summit Chase, 1000 Urlin Ave. Grandview Heights, 43212.

Carole Ann DePaola
Carole DePaola was born on January 18, 1943, and grew up in Orange Village, Ohio. After graduating from Orange High School, she continued her education, earning a bachelor's degree from Miami University and a master's degree from The Ohio State University.
For more than thirty years, Carole was an elementary school teacher in the Southwestern City School District. She loved helping her students explore nature and cherished the relationships she built with her fellow teachers. In addition to her work in the classroom, she served as a mentor teacher, supporting the professional development of countless educators throughout the district.
Carole was a force of nature who believed that nothing was more important than protecting democracy. She worked tirelessly for the Ohio Democratic Party, the Franklin County Democratic Party and for hundreds of candidates for local, state and national office. She was a founding member of the Ohio Democratic Party Women’s Caucus and a tireless advocate for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. Her dedication to making our community a better place led her to organize the early vote operations of the Franklin County Democratic Party for more than twenty years. She was honored as the Franklin County Democrat of the Year in 2026.
Throughout her life, Carole sought opportunities to serve others. While her love for the community began in her classroom, her passion for public service inspired her to advocate for policies she believed would strengthen the lives of all Ohioans, including voter registration and access, education funding and reform, public transit, and environmental protection.
Above all, Carole believed that making the world a better place was both a responsibility and a privilege. She dedicated her life to service and to strengthening democracy, firmly believing that every citizen should vote. Her energy, determination, and generosity touched countless lives and left a lasting impact on her community.
Carole was preceded in death by her father Michael DePaola (1968) and her mother Doris Fricke DePaola (2003). She is survived by her sister, Barbara de Jong (John); her niece, Claire Shim (David); her nephew, Martin de Jong (Eleanor); her great niece, Audrey; and her great nephews Michael de Jong, Andrew de Jong and Luke de Jong.
A celebration of her life will be held on August 15, 2026 at 6 pm at the Lashutka Event Center located at Griggs Reservoir, 3479 Riverside Dr. Upper Arlington. Donations in her honor may be made to the women’s organization of your choice.

Phil Sheridan

Philip L. Sheridan, a long-time resident of Washington, DC, passed away on March 10, 2026 in Westerville, Ohio after a long illness. He was 81.
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Phil was graduated from St. Charles Preparatory School, Ohio University and Harvard Business School. He lived in Los Angeles, California and Chicago, Illinois before settling in Washington, DC, where he founded Dupont Properties and revitalized the buildings at the corner of 18th and S Streets, NW into a thriving area of restaurants, store-fronts, office space and apartments. He had homes in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and Annapolis, Maryland and loved to waterski, windsurf, sail, ski and take motorcycle trips.
Preceded in death by his parents Albert, Sr. and Mary Sheridan, Phil is survived by his long- time partner in life Elizabeth Hallman, brothers Al, Jr. (Karen) Sheridan, and Steve (Barb) Sheridan, nieces and nephews Kevin Sheridan, Laura Gordon, Maggie (Travis) Buckley, Mike (Kate) Sheridan, and Molly (Joe) Brunner, as well as 14 grandnieces and grandnephews.
A celebration of life in Washington, D. C. will be scheduled at a later date.

Mary Jane Struble

Mary Jane (Vagnier) Struble

Mary Jane Struble, born August 15, 1928 in New York City, died August 29, 2025 in Columbus. Preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Grace Vagnier, and her husband, Richard.

Mary's marriage was the most deeply valued part of her life, and she always said that she could feel Richard's presence after his passing in 2005, that he was always with her. Now they are together again. Her surviving family include her daughter Peggy (Dewey) Deloach, her son Daniel (Star), her grandchildren Tim (Sarah) and Mikayla Struble (Vincent Claunch), foster daughter Debra Sexton, grandson Eugene Cody II, and especially recently, her great grandsons Felix and Arlo Struble.

Mary was a graduate of Ohio State University with a Dental Hygiene certification and a Bachelor of Education as well as her graduate studies at Bowling Green State University. Mary had multiple careers during her life including working with children with learning disabilities, and becoming a certified biofeedback consultant. She continued to express her love of teaching by instructing students at Ohio Wesleyan University's OWjL camp on biofeedback, and by tutoring Ohio State international graduate students in English well into her 80’s.

Many people's lives were touched by Mary. Her Care Team stands at the top of the list — Dixon Beuhler, Vicki Grosh, Lisa Kreischer, and Marie Sweeney. Their support and the love they showed to Mary was a reflection of the kind of person she was. Special friends include Deb Shaw, Dede Prince, David Rothert, Dick and Joyce Heinz, Mary and Girard Tracy, and Nancy and John Draper.

Mary loved to travel. She had been everywhere, from Morocco to Maine, Alaska to Costa Rica, Hawaii to Holland. She was especially drawn to the ocean and could spend hours playing in the surf and taking long walks. Mary's faith and spirituality was a deeply valued part of her life and she loved to explore new beliefs and philosophies.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held Saturday May 2, 2026 at the Whetstone Park of Roses Shelter House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
