This was a fun day! Story time.
About 6 months ago, a post came up on one of many breweriana pages that I follow, someone asking about what appeared to be a vintage beer advertising lithographed poster from Philadelphia that his friend had found. The strange part? These guys were from Belgium, and the piece had shown up in a shop in Brussels.
I was intrigued, and skeptical. The piece was so obscure, from a brewery that had been purchased during a period of intense consolidation in Philadelphia Brewing history. That trade name combination only existed for 4 years, around the turn of the last century.
But the style was correct, similar to one done for the nearby John F. Betz & Son, the dates aligned with the short period of time that John C. Miller Brewing Co. was under Consumer's Brewing Co., and some closeups of the piece showed the type of lithography that would have been used at that time, as opposed to modern techniques.
I will skip over many details and the stops and starts of validating the piece and getting it shipped over from Belgium, to today when it showed up. Packaged exceedingly well for the trip, and moved quickly and efficiently by DHL Express.
I took great delight in opening it up, and took a photo each time I peeled off a layer of packaging. The piece is gorgeous!
Next stop will be ACA Paper in Devon, PA to have it removed from the non-acid free cardboard sheet that a previous framer mounted it to. Over time, this backing would acid burn the litho, and reduce its brightness and clarity. Once on the correct archival backing, it'll go to the framer to be put behind museum glass, and then it'll be good for the next 125 years.
I'll update once that is done, and will add any more info I can glean from the seller over in Belgium.
Thanks for reading, and here is the series of pictures of me unwrapping it. If anyone gets 1% of the joy I got out of it, that'll be a win.
