Today is Vernors 160th anniversary! 🥤🎉

First served to the public in Detroit in 1866, Vernors Soda was created by Detroit pharmacist James Vernor and has become one of the city’s most enduring brands and soft drinks. Today, it remains the oldest surviving ginger ale in the United States and a flavor generations of Detroiters have grown up with.

To celebrate, Eastern Market is hosting a free Vernors 160th Anniversary Celebration today, June 14, from 1 to 4pm on Riopelle Street. The event includes historical exhibits, Vernors-inspired food and drinks, interactive experiences, a street-wide toast at 3:30pm, and plenty of opportunities to celebrate one of Detroit’s most iconic creations.

Long before it became a household name, Vernors was sold at a soda fountain inside James Vernor’s Woodward Avenue pharmacy. Over the decades, it grew into a Detroit institution, with generations of Detroiters who still reach for a Vernors when they’re feeling under the weather or ordering a Boston Cooler.

While Vernors is now owned by Keurig Dr Pepper and no longer produced in Detroit, its roots still remain firmly planed here in the city where it began.

160 years later, Vernors remains one of Detroit’s most iconic brands and is a must to try when visiting.

Today, we remember Tim Richmond on what would have been his birthday.

Born June 7, 1955, Tim Richmond wasn't just one of NASCAR's most talented drivers—he was one of its most unforgettable personalities. Charismatic, fearless, and blessed with extraordinary car control, Richmond brought a style and swagger to stock car racing that was decades ahead of its time.

In just 185 NASCAR Cup Series starts, Richmond collected 13 victories, including a remarkable 1986 season with Hendrick Motorsports when he won seven races and finished third in the championship standings. His battles with Dale Earnhardt became legendary, and his daring driving style left fans and competitors in awe. Rick Hendrick once described Richmond's car control as "unbelievable," while many within the sport believed he had all the talent necessary to become a NASCAR champion.

But statistics only tell part of the story.

Tim Richmond was larger than life. He walked into every room with confidence, energy, and a smile that could light up a racetrack. He challenged conventions, entertained fans, and lived life on his own terms. As many in the racing community have reflected over the years, he wasn't just part of the show—he was the show.

Though his life was tragically cut short in 1989 at just 34 years old, Richmond's impact on NASCAR remains undeniable. Many still wonder how many races, championships, and unforgettable moments he might have added to his legacy. Even decades later, fans continue to celebrate his talent, charisma, and the unique spark he brought to the sport.

Today, we celebrate the life of a racer who refused to be ordinary.

Happy Birthday, Tim Richmond.

Gone too soon. Forgotten by none.
