Kohoutek started in 1974, when a group of creative Pitzer students decided to bring together the local community through a two-day celebration of music and art. Kohoutek was originally named after Russian astronomer Lubos Kohoutek, who, in 1973, predicted that a comet of his namesake would end the world as we know it. Pitzer students decided that, if the world was going to end, they might as well
go out with a bang! And thus, Kohoutek was born. Since its formation in 1974, Kohoutek has become a staple of spring life in Claremont and has grown to be the BIGGEST annual on campus event at the Claremont colleges. Kohoutek has a history of getting some of the biggest names In the music industry (before their prime) to headline the event including: GZA of Wu-Tang Clan, The Soft Pack, Javelin, Matt and Kim, Blackalicious, Akron/Family, The Roots, Tea Leaf Green, O.A.R., Zion I, The Go! Lif, Lyrics Born, HEALTH, The Growlers, Phantogram, Octopus Project, Hot Sugar, King Kahn & BBQ Show and more!
