Open House Chicago is returning to Back of the Yards & Bridgeport this year on Sat./Sun. Oct. 17-18 from 10am-4pm, and all three of Bubbly Dynamics' buildings will be participating! This free public festival organized by Chicago Architecture Center offers behind-the-scenes access to more than 200 sites, including many that are not normally open to the public!

What to do with the random bits of plastic that keep sneaking into your home? First, CHECK THE LIST of items collected by Reduce Waste Chicago for reuse or responsible recycling (see link below), and THEN start putting aside items on their list for Reuse-a-Palooza at The Plant on Sun. Oct. 4.

Even those random bits like plastic toothpaste tubes, brushes, floss containers, and contact lens blister packs can be processed outside the usual landfill-destined trash stream.

And as you stockpile these items, it will probably dawn on you that there's an awful lot of single-use plastic in your day-to-day. Let's talk about how to avoid those plastics in the first place... we've got tips galore for you at Reuse-a-Palooza!

What to do with that dusty old bicycle that isn't getting used, or spare bike components, accessories, tubes, or tires? Bring them in to Reuse-a-Palooza on Sun. Oct. 4, where Working Bikes will be collecting them for repair and reuse. Pictured here: the haul from our last Reuse-a-Palooza!

Pro tip: you can donate your old cycles to Working Bikes at their shop, or at a host of locations throughout Chicagoland, the burbs, and beyond, with advance coordination. But you should come to Reuse-a-Palooza regardless; it's gonna be a blast!

Kukucachew is a Chicago-based business founded by Dr. Sarah Ku, a former Assistant Professor of Sustainable Business Management at Loyola University Chicago, who has left academia to pursue a business focused on community action. Collecting food that would have otherwise gone to waste, Kukucachew prepares and distributes ready-to-eat-meals to offer free food in partnership with The Love Fridge. They also transform food to extend its shelf life into other snacks and items, all with the goal of fighting food insecurity and food waste.

"If you feed someone a fish, you feed them for a day. If you teach someone to fish, you feed them for a lifetime."

Kukucachew embraces this adage, offering cooking classes and workshops through a sliding scale/pay-it-forward model so that people can learn how to be more self-sufficient, self-reliant, and have more control over their food. As a business, Kukucachew is founded on the philosophy that for-profits can and should help lead positive social changes, modeling the type of business behavior we all want to see more of in the world.

Take them to Reuse-a-Palooza, where *many* of our partners would be happy to take them off your hands. Cradles to Crayons Chicago is accepting gently-used clothing, shoes, and school supplies, and The Struggling Black Girl Magic Club is accepting school uniforms and usable gym shoes. PAWS Chicago will be taking towels and blankets to keep pets warm for winter, and Chicago Textile Center will be accepting various fabrics.
