Heartbreak Grape: Grey to Black
Pinot Noir is one of the most planted red grapes on the planet; an ancient Burgundian varietal prone to genetic instability, it has thousands of documented clones and a range of famous family members including Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, & Pinot Meunier. “Pinot” because of the tight, pinecone-shaped clusters of grapes that render the varietal somewhat disease prone, leading to the “heartbreak grape” moniker. Full of enough red fruit and chocolate to get you through a surprise encounter with your ex, the risk of planting such a finicky varietal is worth the velvet divan of sultry elegance any good love promises.

After sixteen years as the w**emaker at Renaissance, Clos Saron was established in 1999 by Gideon Beinstock and Saron Rice. Together they took this dubious financial challenge out of the love of outdoor work, w**e and their wish to do something productive in their lives. The soul of the project is their Home Vineyard—2.5 acres of densely planted own-rooted Pinot Noir on a remarkable but unlikely site. Gideon has something like the soul of an artist, the work ethic of farmer and a minimalist sculptor’s point of view coaxing something personally unique in the face of such a distinctive and powerful terroir. These w**es demand food, patience and time in the cellar but they reward a careful steward with a generative and unique experience of this special place.
