Broads Lounge presents Broads Who Read: a quarterly book club reading books with feminist themes. Mark your calendars for Monday, November 9th!

Hosted at Broads, book club discussion will be facilitated by local reader Rachel
Rachel has a Master’s degree in Contemporary Literature, but now she just reads for fun. When not reading, she’s probably watching women’s soccer.

Broads Who Read also support their community! A portion of sales on book club night will be donated to Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC)
Each quarter, a different organization will be chosen based on the book’s themes.

Our FALL selection is the book
Taipei Story by R.F. Kuang

Summary:
College freshman Lily Chen is off to spend the summer in Taipei at an intensive language program like so many Chinese American students before her, hoping to connect with the culture she inherited but never fully understood. But a promising start quickly unravels. Her classes are grueling, her roommate is driving her insane, and a reckless trip to the hot springs with a guy she barely knows soon has her classmates viciously gossiping. She feels adrift, a foreigner in a country she thought would feel like home.

Then shocking news Lily’s grandfather has passed away. The loss forces her to grapple with now-unanswerable questions about her family history. As Lily grieves, she’s drawn into a journey of self-discovery—piecing together memories, stories, and silences over a series of hilarious and devastating attempts at connection.

What if the diaspora fantasy of homecoming never comes true? What if learning a language can’t bring you any closer to the people you’re trying to reach? What if you search for your family’s history, but your family doesn’t want to share? What if you wait too long to ask the right questions? As Lily struggles for answers, her summer becomes a poignant search for understanding—of herself, her family, and the meaning of home.

Ehran Jade is back with us for another lovely night of live jazz along with locals Alex Keiss on guitar and Tony Tortora on bass. This is a rare treat! Let’s show them some love.

Ehran Jade is an Australian Jazz singer living in Paris.
 She began her career in Sydney, Australia, quickly becoming a regular on the music scene with her bands ‘The Hepburns’ and ‘The Golden Age Band’, she charmed audiences with her infectious energy, natural musicality and elegant style.  After 5 years of performing across Australia and New Zealand, Ehran Jade took her musical journey (and vintage wardrobe) to beautiful Paris.  In the three years that she has lived in Paris, Ehran Jade has become a regular performer at the infamous ‘La Coupole’ for the much-loved ‘Paris Follies’ vintage ball. She has performed at the historic jazz club ‘Le Petit Journal’, as well as iconic venues ‘Les Deux Magots’ and ‘Maxims’. She has also performed with large scale, cabaret style spectacles for Gatsyby-eque parties and historic celebrations.   With her warm and engaging stage presence, Ehran Jade sings with an open heart to bring authenticity to the songs and the stage.
