Hollowing out my next bowl. Something about shavings coming off the tool like this is really satisfying. I’ll post pics of the bowl once it’s finished.

The magic of a basket weave cutting boards. This is one of my favorite end grain butcher blocks to build.

This one is maple and walnut and will be about 12x18 and about 1.5 inches thick. I’ll post pictures of the finished product when it’s done.

Just finished this segmented bowl with a chevron feature ring. It is made from cherry, maple and purple heart. Each ring is made of 24 individually cut segments. For the chevron ring I laminated a long strip of the different species of wood. I then cut them at an angle and reassembled it to form the chevron. This was my first attempt at doing this type of feature ring and I’m happy with how it turned out and as always, I learned a lot and had to exercise a lot of patience.

Turning epoxy is fun but definitely messy. These strings wind up everywhere.

I’m really happy with how this brick pattern bowl turned out. It’s Hard Maple and Caribbean Walnut. Each row has 16 bricks and 16 mortar pieces for a total of 192 individual pieces that were put together then turned smooth on the lathe.

I’m looking forward to making more of these and exploring different shapes, sizes and species of wood.

Working on my next segmented bowl. This one is hopefully going to be a brick pattern. I love it when the shavings come off the end of the gouge in these nice long strands.

Working on ways to make regular things a little different. I carved this spiral design on a cherry bowl to see if I would like the look. Turns out I really like it and will continue to practice with this method and explore other ways to incorporate textures in my wood turning. Let us know what you think.

Finished this segmented vase. 836 individual pieces of Maple, Cherry, Purpleheart, Bloodwood and Wenge. The final size is about 8.5 inches high and 6.5 inches wide. I coated the inside with epoxy so it’s functional as well. By far my most ambitious turning project and I’m thrilled with how it came out.

I think videos like this got me into wood turning. I love making the shavings fly as I hollow out a bowl. The biggest challenge (other than cleaning up afterwards) is not going too deep and turning your bowl into a funnel.
