Beginner friendly dance classes for jazzy blues!

Come join Kara Pemberton and Sarah Caldow in this four lesson progressive series as we work our way to learning Savoy Walk; a blues dance idiom originating in the ballrooms of Harlem, NYC.
We will cover the basics of blues dancing in a ballroomin’ style, using the entire dance floor effectively, and the Blues aesthetic choices that make this idiom so incredible.
Classes are Weekly on Thursdays from 7-8PM (June 4th to 25th).

Classes:
June 4th: Ballroomin’ in Close Embrace
This beginner friendly lesson will get you started with the fundamentals of close embrace in Ballroomin’ Blues dances: a subset of blues dances originating in ballrooms and jazz clubs

June 11th: Get Where you’re going in Ballroomin’
Most Ballroomin’ Blues dances take advantage of a large dance floor, so in this class we’ll be adding musicality and even more Bluesy feel to your close embrace by playing with walking rhythms and techniques for traveling

June 18th: Pushing into Promenade
Close embrace is the foundation of all Blues dances, but the momentum and aesthetic of Ballroomin’ blues create great opportunities to dance side-by-side in Promenade. This week we’ll work on getting into and out of promenade from close embrace, as well as some tips and tricks for moving in line of dance with good floor craft

June 25th: An Introduction to Savoy Walk
Places like the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, NYC, were melting pots for jazz and blues dance styles. Our last class will focus on the basics of a Ballroomin’ Blues dance called Savoy Walk, which is what some folks called the blend of close embrace walking with spins, tricks, and dips done by some dancers at the Savoy. Featuring a guest appearance from Mike and Dan Legenthal!

Hi Folks,

We are T-4 days away from our Ballroomin' blues lesson series, and we've been working on some exciting stuff that we can't wait to share with you! That being said, if you are planning on signing up for the series, please do it ASAP! We are currently under the minimum number of sign-ups needed to rent out the dance space and may have to cancel the event as a result.

If you are currently signed up for the series, or were planning on taking some but not all of the classes in the series, please bear with us. We will update you on any event changes by Wednesday night.
