Today is the day. Our last day.

And before we turn out the lights tonight, we want to say something simple, and fully true:

Thank you.

Thank you for walking through our doors, whether it was once, or a hundred times.

Thank you for letting this little social house be part of your celebrations, your ordinary Thursdays, your messy days, your bright days, and your in-between days.

Thank you for letting us try something a little different here. A place built around beauty, playfulness, intention, music, community, and care.

When we opened in June 2022, we didn’t know exactly what Art of Joy would become. But you shaped it. Every laugh, every hug, every cotton-candy-covered kiddo, every festival, every quiet conversation at the bar, every book pulled off our shelves…you gave this place its soul.

We’ve said throughout these last posts that Art of Joy was never just a building or a business model. It was an experiment in joyful living. A gathering place built on the belief that connection matters, that small beautiful things matter, that kindness matters, that people matter.

And because of you, that experiment worked.

Even as we close our doors today, the joy doesn’t disappear. It goes with you, into your homes, your friendships, your future celebrations, the way you look for beauty, the way you show up for each other.

If you felt even one moment of lightness or comfort or fun or magic here…that was the whole point.

So here’s our final toast:

To joy, real joy. The kind you create, choose, notice, and share.
To this community, who made something extraordinary inside four little walls.

And to the next chapters for all of us.

With full hearts, and so much gratitude.

Okay okay, gather round, it’s honesty time here.

One of the things I’m most proud of at Art of Joy is how we chose to take care of our staff. From day one, we built this place with the belief that people really matter the most, and that good wages, tamer hours, and a little paid extra rest in January weren’t luxuries, but part of what made this place feel like Art of Joy.

And yes… being honest, those choices came with real costs. We could have run things leaner. We could have stretched hours longer. We could have followed the industry standard and probably saved ourselves some money along the way. But that’s never who we were. Shorter open hours and higher costs ultimately did make it tough to keep going.

Still, I wouldn’t trade the spirit of this place for anything.

This year, we won the “Spirit” award in the Scary Bloody Mary competition. This award is chosen by the hundreds of people who visited us that day. That meant so much to us, because while we do love our Bloody Mary recipe, what truly set Art of Joy apart has always been the people who brought their warmth and fun to every shift. Knowing that you felt that too filled our hearts.

To every incredible person who has worked here over the years: thank you. You made Art of Joy magical. And to all of you who visited and supported us – we thank you for seeing the magic.

Please come see our wonderful team before we close on Saturday, December 20th, and don’t forget to use up any gift cards by then too!

XOXO

One more thing we want to say, before these final days slip away:

Art of Joy has always been, at its heart, a place where every person belongs.

A place to show up exactly as you are: loud or quiet, glitter-covered or exhausted, joyful or hurting, figuring it out or starting over. We’ve believed, from day one, that people deserve to be welcomed, celebrated, and seen in the fullness of who they are.

It breaks my heart that there are people in this world, especially teens or young adults, who feel like they’re not “made right,” or that something about them disqualifies them from belonging or being loved. If you’ve ever walked into Art of Joy and felt even one breath of ease, one moment of “I’m okay exactly as I am,” then we did something meaningful here.

To our LGBTQIA+ friends, families, and young people:
You have always been safe and welcome here.
You are not wrong, or too much. You are beautifully, wonderfully human, and you deserve spaces that honor that.

Inclusivity isn’t a marketing line to us; it’s a way of seeing people. It’s the belief that community is richer when everyone gets to show up whole.

We hope you continue to find, or create, spaces where you can breathe, laugh, love, and be fully yourself. If Art of Joy ever gave you that feeling, even for a moment, then this place did what it was meant to do.

With love, and with fierce belief in your belonging,
Your friends at Art of Joy

Turns out, kids are people too!

That’s a message we’ve carried in our hearts, and one we really focused on when building and running our social house. Exhausted parents need a place they can bring kids while still being an actual adult. Kids need a place they can come without being painfully bored out of their minds. It’s really isolating to be a parent of smaller kids. The mental health impact of parenting is REAL, y’all, and we need to have places that include young families in our wider community. It’s meant a lot to us that you’ve brought your kiddos here!

Has there been ear shatteringly bad kiddo karaoke? Yes.

Have we been impressed by the sheer creativity of kiddos to make spectacular messes here? Also, yes.

Does that change a thing? It does not. We love you and your kiddos.

Come bring your kiddos once more before we close our doors on December 20th! Make sure to dig through your junk drawers for any remaining gift cards to use before then too.

Hey! Kat here!

Art of Joy, or rather Mary, found me in the Fall of 2023. I’d never spent any real time in Cedarburg or known of Art of Joy. One day I received a voicemail from Mary, and my world shifted. Something drew me to this person and this place. I was a sucker as soon as I walked through the Peacock Blue door frame. I found my place.

For myself, and for many, Art of Joy has been a safe place to land. Walking through the door has often been a reset, a time to connect and explore. It’s so easy to allow the outside world to affect your daily outlook, but to step inside these four walls, painted in the brightest colors imaginable, and gilded with touches of our own personalities, is a transformative experience. To experience the Art of Joy is to experience Joy—truly.

I’ve seen weddings, birthdays, graduations and countless other celebrations. But more than this, I’ve witnessed genuine happiness, curiosity, creativity, and connection in everyday moments. That’s a whole lot of emotion for a bar! Knowing that this space existed for our customers and staff alike brings me great solace—I know we’ll all be taking a piece of this with us on our journey.

Our Art of Joy staff is absolutely the best. They are the right amount of silly and serious. Whether you’re having the best day or the worst, they’ve been there for me and you. From spinning cotton candy in the yard to helping you find the best gift for a friend, they’re always down to assist. It has been such a pleasure to work with everyone.

As Mary has stated so beautifully, this is not the end of Art of Joy—just the end of our current chapter. This chapter has been so rich and full of life. I’ve learned and experienced so much.

I’m beyond grateful to have had this experience. I will see all of you soon.

So…..what IS the Art of Joy?

We’re not an art store. Although we’ve heard this a lot over the years!

I chose this name because I think it’s truly a skill or art form to live a joyous life. Most of the world around us is not engineered to help us do this very well. Our “frenemy” social media, is not engineered to help us do this very well. The dysregulated frenzy of what’s apparently important in life, does not help us do this very well.

The Art of Joy is:

The practice of living with intention, gratitude, and connection in order to create a life filled with joy. It’s doing the work and developing the skills to create and receive joy.

Is this easy? It is NOT. But….to me, it’s a big part of our life’s work.

I’m immeasurably happier now than I was ten years ago, and infinitely happier than 20 years ago. Is my life easier now? It is not. Has it been smooth sailing? Also, no. Is the world going better? Meh, no.

However…learning the grace of settling into my own skin, and feeling the ease I get from expecting the heartbeat of ups and downs of life, helps. Breathing life into the dark hard parts of my heart, helps. Learning how to see and release trauma, helps. Choosing a gentler approach, helps.

Life is too f&%$ing hard to just grind our way through, and what a sad way to do it, too. This is why we’ve had a curated book section at Art of Joy from the start. I’ve read every book, included just the bangers, and I hope they might be helpful to you too. Stop in and see us before we close December 20th. Any good reads that help your heart that we missed from our shelves?

Our love letter to beauty:

As we’re counting down the special final days at Art of Joy, here is our formal love letter to beauty. The many kinds of beauty we’ve seen and held here. A smile, a sigh, a giggle. Bright colors, cotton candy, playfulness. Warm hugs, rekindled connections, and coziness.

Beauty takes many forms, and is an essential part of a well-crafted life, and central to our love affair with each of you in our community. What beauty have you so generously shared with us here? What beauty do you see today? We see you, and we are immeasurably changed by the beauty you’ve shared with us these last few years.

We’d love to see you before we hang up our hats on Saturday, December 20th. From our warm hearts to yours,

Your friends at Art of Joy

Hi! James here.

With less than 2 weeks left until our beautiful social house & mercantile’s final day - Saturday, December 20th - I’ve struggled to sum up in 2,200 characters what it has meant to me over the past 3 years. Day 1 customer and supporter to musician to music booker to Creative Director/Music Curator, I’ve had countless adventures in IT, social media, design, photography, vinyl curating, cotton candy spinning (well, just the one time), and so much joyous creation. I wouldn’t trade it for anything!

Highlights -
MUSIC! I became friends with so many amazing musicians. Musicians are magicians, & I’m grateful for all of you that brought the magic & for everyone that showed up to enjoy/support it. I was also honored to play so many shows and host LiVe BaNd KaRaOkE!

FESTS! Winter, Strawberry, Wine & Harvest, Oktober... our forever friends provide an amazing opportunity for businesses big & small to participate & thrive so we did our best to do it up right!

EVENTS! A ton of fun events - Galentine’s Day, Connection Book Club, New Year’s Eve, & some RAGER School’s Out Kid Parties. I LOVE that we were the perfect place for an adult get-together & equally a welcoming space for littles - mine and everyone else’s.

CHARITY! I loved collaborating and being inspired by charitable organizations like , , , , , & If you’re not familiar with any of these please do yourself a favor and get to know them all!

PEOPLE! At the heart of Art of Joy is connection, and we were lucky enough to have countless special people - employees and customers - that shaped Art of Joy into the unique & special space that it became. I have so many people to thank that had a huge impact on me throughout this journey and am going to do my best to thank each of you personally over the coming weeks.

Between now & the 20th I’ll be sharing AOJ highlights from Mary and me. AND we have LOTS of music & festivities planned, please stop by one (or ten) more times to celebrate our journey with us. I’ll be around, if I see you we’ll raise a glass to Art of Joy!

✨See you at the shop!✨
