The Station

The Station Beer, cocktails, and live music all in a historic train station in the heart of downtown Carrboro. It’s also the location that R. E. M. Thirsty?

The Station is a historic landmark older even than the name “Carrboro.” Built in 1882, it was the focal point of the town–then called West End. The space, which originally housed the local train depot, also holds a place in music history: Elizabeth Cotton was inspired to write her famous folk song, Freight Train, in the early 1900s as tribute to the trains that stopped in Carrboro, which she could

hear at night from the bedroom of her childhood home. chose to play their first show outside of their home state of Georgia in 1980. In the past century, the space has been home to an assortment of businesses, only to come full circle back to its musical beginnings. Other groups/artists who have graced our iconic stage throughout the past 30 years include Bad Brains, Members of The Roots, Lake Street Dive, The DBs, Owen Campbell (Australia’s Got Talent finalist), Kenny Roby (6 String Drag/Solo), and Snarky Puppy. Our goal for The Station is to celebrate the musical moments that it’s been built on and host our own events for the history books. We often host live music on the weekends, Mondays with our weekly open mic, our popular Thursday night Karaoke event (hosted by the amazing Empress Kerisha) and other unique static events throughout the week. We offer a range of rotating beers (bottled and on draught) including craft cocktails made with fresh and locally-sourced ingredients, a select wine list, and some delicious non-alcoholic options. Plus, we have two large porches perfect for relaxing outdoors with a tasty beverage when the weather’s nice. So come over, grab drink, grab a bite, and listen to some tunes with us! Our Story

The Station is a historic landmark older even than the name “Carrboro.” Built in 1882, it was the focal point of the town–then called West End. The space, which originally housed the local train depot, also holds a place in music history: Elizabeth Cotton was inspired to write her famous folk song, Freight Train, in the early 1900s as tribute to the trains that stopped in Carrboro, which she could hear at night from the bedroom of her childhood home. It’s also the location that R. E. M. chose to play their first show outside of their home state of Georgia in 1980. In the past century, the space has been home to an assortment of businesses, only to come full circle back to its musical beginnings. Our goal for The Station is to celebrate the musical moments that it’s been built on and host our own events for the history books. We have upgraded the sound, lighting, and acoustic treatments in the room so we can offer professionally-run shows in a unique space that feels & sounds good. We often host live music, DJ events, and other unique acts on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Periodically, we feature events in our Secret Show series, where we invite musical acts that would typically play a much larger venue to perform in a rare, more intimate setting for their fans, so be sure to check the calendar regularly! We are open from 5pm to 2am Monday-Sunday. Thirsty? We offer a wide range of bottled beer, a regularly rotating selection of beers on draught, craft cocktails made with fresh and locally-sourced ingredients, a select wine list, delicious non-alcoholic options, and a unique selection of house-made Bloody Marys. Be sure to ask about our ever-changing daily specials & take part in regular features like Wine Down Wednesdays, where all bottles of wine are 1/2 price. Hungry? We serve food from CrossTies Barbecue Sun-Thurs (5:30pm-9:00pm) & Fri-Sat (5:30-9:30pm). Plus, we have two large porches perfect for relaxing outdoors with a tasty beverage when the weather’s nice. So come over, grab a drink, grab a bite, and listen to some tunes with us!
