With rain in the forecast for this Sunday, Canton Parks and Recreation’s Picnic in the Park, sponsored by Kennedy’s BBQ and Taggarts Ice Cream, has been rescheduled to Sunday, October 4, from 4–6 p.m. at Stadium Park.

Spend the afternoon exploring the trails and touring the historic Timken Gatehouse. Trail maps will be available at check-in.

A Legacy That Began in 1932.

Pictured from left to right are Jim Jacob, Wilbur Jacob, and Jerry Jacob, standing with a portrait of John Jacob, Wilbur’s father and the man who began the Jacob family’s stewardship of Bender’s Tavern.

In July 1932, local newspapers announced that John Jacob had leased Bender’s Restaurant from Mrs. Anna A. Bender. Already well known for supervising the famed Camp Kegel dinners, John brought his experience and enthusiasm for hospitality to the historic restaurant at Court Avenue and Second Street.

One newspaper writer, after speaking with John about “steaks, lobsters, and all the delicacies,” promptly made a reservation for the grand opening.

Bender’s officially reopened under John Jacob on August 3, 1932.

More than nine decades later, the Jacob family continues a tradition rooted in hospitality, quality, and a respect for the history that came before us.

Four generations. One historic restaurant. A legacy still being written.

We are celebrating 100 years! Starting this month we are going to be asking weekly trivia questions for our loyal, wonderful customers to have a chance to win a free t-shirt, coffee mug, quart of ice cream or a 10.00 gift certificate.
Everyone that participates will be entered for a chance to win a 100.00 gift certificate to be drawn at the end of the month.

All month long we are going to have journals, cut out ice cream cones and Star bursts for people to write some of their favorite memories from the past 100 years!
