Thank you to Knapp Winery for hosting the Saperavi Social event! It was a wonderful experience and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people, pouring and talking about wine and the camaraderie with my fellow wine makers. The breadth of experience was quite vast with many well known and respected winemakers. The Saperavi's were all nice and expressive of the variety's characteristics. At the same time, while there were similarities present, it was nice to be able to appreciate each winemaker's artistic approach to their interpretation of Saperavi. That flexibility is what makes New York wines so wonderful.

Reviewers sometimes try to place a particular variety into a box and limit how the variety should be expressed, which not only ties the hands of winemakers, but also limits consumers in their choices. Having that flexibility allows winemakers to create different approaches to each variety and lends greater opportunity for selection of a particular wine that meets the individual needs of the consumer. There is no perfect wine that will be universally accepted and preferred by all consumers. Not everyone likes a Picasso or a Monet, yet some people find them extraordinary.

As winemakers our job is to paint an artistic interpretation of a wine that will appeal to a segment of the population that appreciates that stylistic approach. Conformity only limits our creativity. Keep on painting the picture that you envision for your wine and those that have a similar vision will find it.
