The Mad Monkfish Welcome to The Mad Monkfish's home on Facebook. Great food like jazz is spontaneous and joyful. We love to jam on Asian culinary themes.

Nothing warms the palate like an explosion of flavor or the heart like a burst of song! We are passionate about ethnic flavors & jazz, and that’s why we’ve branded our unique take on sushi & Asian specialties: Thelonious Monkfish. Our menu reflects both our respect for gustatory tradition and our sense of play and innovation. Our fish is so fresh it blows its own horn! The interior features reclaimed old-growth oak, old barn board, plush brown leather chairs, waterfall slate mosaics, sconces reminiscent of puffer fish and a section with tatami mats for traditional Japanese seating.

“From the excellent service to the fantastic flavors, this eclectic Asian eatery got it right. And all at an affordable price. Whether you’re a longtime sushi lover, or brand new to the dish altogether, Thelonious Monkfish can open your eyes and ears to a new dining experience.” --Weekly Dig

100 Miles at Monkfish: Greg Hopkins & The Cryogenic Renaissance Orchestra

Featuring trumpeter, composer, and arranger Greg Hopkins, this nine-piece ensemble celebrates the legacy of Miles Davis’s Birth of the Cool while exploring the music of McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Hopkins himself.

“Miles at 100, Greg at 80”

Inspired by three groundbreaking jazz nonets, the Cryogenic Renaissance Orchestra brings together music from Miles Davis’s legendary 1949–50 Birth of the Cool sessions, McCoy Tyner’s Tender Moments, and Herbie Hancock’s The Prisoner—alongside an exciting collection of original compositions by Hopkins.

The repertoire includes Moondreams, Israel, and Boplicity, as well as Duke Ellington’s Such Sweet Thunder, Tyner’s Mode for John, and Hopkins’s ambitious seven-part theme-and-variations composition, The Lost Bagatelles of the Mushroom Empire.

Hopkins, longtime Professor of Jazz Composition at Berklee College of Music, was a soloist and arranger with the Buddy Rich Band from 1972 to 1974. The ensemble brings together an exceptional lineup of Boston-area jazz talent.

As Boston Globe writer Bob Blumenthal put it:

“Greg Hopkins, the inspired trumpeter/composer is one of Boston’s unappreciated jazz treasures.”

A very special guest joined us for Vocal Jam a couple of Sundays ago. ❤️

After a long time away, Mom was finally back at The Mad Monkfish, enjoying the music, the company, and a little special treatment from Chef Ginger, who whipped up a few dishes just for her.

And her verdict?

“Mmmm, it’s good.”

It meant a lot to have her back with us. ❤️

Join us for Jazz Vocal Jam today, Sunday, October 18, from 3–6 PM!
