A special thank you to our Public Works, Utilities, and Community Development departments, whose work behind the scenes keeps our downtown clean, connected, cared for, and growing—helping create a welcoming and wonderful place for our residents, businesses, and visitors to enjoy.

Some places become part of a community’s identity. The Gem Theatre is one of those places.

This historic downtown landmark has brought people together for generations through movies, music, comedy, theatre, and the arts. Arts and culture help make a community a great place to live, giving us opportunities to connect, create memories, and experience something together.

We’re grateful to the Friends of Calhoun's GEM Theatre for continuing to make the arts accessible to our community, and to the The Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia for investing in and supporting the Gem’s vision for the future.

We’re especially excited about what’s ahead with the Pearl King Center for Cultural Arts. This next chapter will honor the King family’s legacy while creating even more opportunities for arts and culture in downtown Calhoun.

We can’t wait to see this next piece of downtown’s story come to life!

The Gem Theater in downtown Calhoun is on a mission to create encounters with the arts for all. Their mission is to make live music, comedy, drama workshops, and the joy of going to the movies available to every person in this community, not just those who can afford a ticket.

When the pandemic forced their doors closed and left them without revenue for months, the Gem did not give up on that belief; instead, they partnered with the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia to launch a free movie program that gave their neighbors a reason to gather again and rediscover what the theatre means to this town.

Last year, the Gem screened 53 free movies, because access to the arts is not a luxury to them, it is a promise they keep to Northwest Georgia every single year.

With continued grant support from the Community Foundation, the Gem is also restoring a neighboring building that will one day open as the Pearl King Center for Cultural Arts, honoring the legacy of the family who first brought this theatre back to life in 2011.

Investing in our own backyard transforms the quality of life for the community, and we are proud to support the arts with the Gem Theater in Calhoun, Georgia.
