NAMES YOU CAN TRUST CELEBRATES THE RELEASE OF TERROR/CACTUS’ NEW RELEASE
With a live set by TERROR/CACTUS

Seattle-based Martin Selasco has been steadily cultivating his individual brand of futuristic electronic cumbia, playing a multitude of shows and festivals, as well as releasing a handful of singles and a self-produced long-player, Forastero. The Buenos Aires-born Selasco embodies the new wave of cumbia that has always been championed by his home country: machine-forward audio/visual performances combined with a mixture of bugged out digital folklore and live instrumentation, and in the case of this latest recording with NYCT, baritone and clarinet from Seattle-collaborator  (https://www.instagram.com/kateplayssax/) .

NO SSP! AT BARBÈS ON 5/13! Come hear great Balkan dance music with Niva duo (9pm) and Lubo Smilenov and Matt Moran (10pm-midnight). Niva sings and plays Macedonian roots music on traditional instruments - alternately lyrical, mournful, ecstatic and spooky music that used to be the soundtrack of everyday life back in the day. With Bridget Robbins - kaval; and Kristina Vaskys - tambura & vocals. Lubo and Matt bring to life complex, odd-time rhythms of Bulgaria with the distinct sounds of traditional instruments such as the kaba gaida bagpipe, the gadulka (an ancient bowed instrument), and the tupan (super funky double-headed make-you-crazy drum).

Barbès is turning 23 on May 1st.

Not a landmark per se, but we’re still amazed to have survived this long.
In NY club years, 23 is closer to 100 years - and while we have been contemplating mortality a little more seriously, we do hope to last another few years.
So, instead of complaining about the state of the world (not good) the state of the country (not too good either) and the state of the city (“the rent is too damn high!”), this Thursday we will be celebrating our longevity with music, friends -  and some degree of hope. Because getting together and playing music still holds meaning.

7pm - Eleonore Weill (Yiddish and Provençal modern folklore)
8:30pm - Combo Daguerre (Original French Noir chansons with NY cumbia veterans)
10pm - Los Crema Paraiso (psychedelic Venezuelan joropos )
some probable guests tba
