Out of all the foals born each year, only a select few have the right look, size, and temperament to pull the famous red wagon. Here is a look behind the scenes at what their multi-year training program actually looks like:

• Groundwork Basics (Ages 1–2): Training starts early at Warm Springs Ranch. Young horses learn the absolute basics of manners, like standing completely still for the farrier (blacksmith) and getting comfortable with being handled by humans.

• Pulling Alone (Age 3): Before they ever join the big team, horses are taught how to pull weight individually. They are harnessed to small carts or simple weights so they get used to the feeling of pushing their shoulders forward into the collar to move a load.
