Thank you to everyone who attended our panel discussion event Forged in Iron, Built by Hand.

Also, thank you to our wonderful panelists T. Marie King, Barry McNealy, and Joshua Jenkins who gave their insight into how Birmingham's Black labor built the city and ways to continue telling their story.

Did you know the Sloss Shop has work from our Summer Youth Apprentices?

Only $10 each, these original works were created from scratch (literally!) by teens who spent their summer learning the art of metalwork. Each summer, we invite ten students to shadow our resident artists and work in every aspect of our foundry for eight weeks.

Our apprentices have gone on to careers in welding, fabrication, engineering, sculpture, and architecture, all inspired by their time at Sloss Furnaces!

Applications for Summer 2027 will open in early 2027, but you can stay in the loop by signing up for our Metal Arts mailing list at the link in our bio!

History Wednesday!

In 1935, Sloss began cupola-testing each batch of pig iron made at their City Furnaces site (our current museum). This allowed Sloss to ensure their iron met customers' specifications. It also allowed them to test the quality of the iron made on site. This was part of a larger push by the Sloss-Sheffield Steel & Iron Company to embrace new advances and lead in technology, innovation, and pig iron quality.
