Some days, writing feels elegant.

Some days, it feels like your draft belongs in the trash can, your manuscript is begging for the fireplace, and the only reasonable response is singing, “the roof, the roof, the roof is on fire…”

Enter Hector.

Lighting the candle.

Setting the mood.

Trying very hard not to burn it all down.

Because sometimes the plot is a mess, the characters are uncooperative, and the sentence absolutely is not sentencing.

At Quill, we take the creative process seriously… but never too seriously.

Sometimes all it takes is a little glow, a little humor, and a candle that smells like books and bad decisions to get back into the work.

We just hope Hector keeps the chaos metaphorical. 🔥🕯️

There is something irresistible about the books people tried to hide.

The challenged ones often carry the sharpest questions, the boldest voices, and the truths someone hoped would stay quiet.

A banned book section is more than a shelf. It is a record of fear, courage, resistance, and imagination.

This September, we’re building a dinner around those stories.

Come hungry for conversation.

Some days, Hector is simply hanging on by a thread.
Or a chandelier chain.

Same thing, really.

Finished a draft? Swing from the chandelier.

Got one good sentence after three hours of suffering? Swing from the chandelier.

Opened your manuscript and realized Chapter 7 is just vibes and unresolved trauma? Absolutely swing from the chandelier.

At Quill, we don’t recommend this as an official coping strategy.

But emotionally?

Hector gets it.

Tell us about the last time you felt like you were swinging from the chandelier?

Every reader has the right to close a book.

We can dislike it, disagree with it, set it down, argue with it, or decide it is not for us.

Censorship goes further. It makes that decision for everyone.

Our September dinner at Quill will explore banned books, creative freedom, and the conversations that begin when stories are allowed to stay on the shelf.

Books make people uncomfortable when they tell the truth too plainly.

They name grief, power, trauma, identity, injustice, survival, and all the things polite rooms sometimes avoid.

Censorship grows from fear: fear of recognition, fear of questions, fear of what a reader might finally understand.

This September, our Quill dinner will gather around banned books and the stories people tried to silence. We will hear from the voices that keep finding their way back.

It has taken us a moment to get here...Okay, more than a moment.

But we finally have a winner for our May writing contest, The Women Who Raised Me.

This piece is powerful, honest, and deeply uncomfortable in the way some true stories are. Please read with care; the subject matter may be triggering for some readers. But this is her story, her truth, and the kind of voice we believe deserves room to be heard.

We hope you’ll take a moment to read it, honor it, and witness the courage it took to put these words on the page.

We’re also making a small shift with Quill writing contests: moving forward, contests will run every other month.

Our next contest opens today. You’ll have until the 15th to enter and until the 30th to submit your piece.

More details are coming soon, but for now, we’re grateful for every writer brave enough to tell the truth, follow the prompt, and let the work be seen.
