Bellport Dave’s Vintage Cards

Bellport Dave’s Vintage Cards I’m a collector first, a sports card dealer second. I do appraisals, so people don’t get ripped off by unscrupulous dealers/friends/neighbors.

I broker deals when somebody just wants a big ticket card with the confidence to know that it will be authentic. BBQ tanks, RV's, space heaters, 20, 30, 40, 60 lb tanks, trailers....we can fill them all!

Baseball Cards are such an interesting part of my life. And almost all money I make from Baseball Cards I end up spending on more Baseball Cards! This past weekend I went to a show to find a card for a client and make sure that he deals with a reputable seller, while I was there I added a couple of cards to my Tom Seaver collection! I collect a lot of different things, but Tom Seaver is a main focus of my collection. It doesn’t have to be valuable. It doesn’t have to be something people in general care about. It just has to be something I think is cool. I added these two cards to my Graded Seaver collection. I do love the oddball stuff! Happy collecting everybody!

More often than not, when I appraise somebody’s collection, the bulk of it is from the Junk Wax era and the people are disappointed in what I have to tell them. Usually, I don’t charge these people as most of them are, if not friends, at least acquaintances. Often they don’t want me to walk away empty handed.
This gentleman knows me well enough to know that I’m a huge Mets Fan. Being a Mets fan is often painful. Unfortunately we have to look to the past for our best memories!
This is one of the greatest moments of any Met fans fandom.
When I was getting ready to leave he said “can I give you something?” He had noticed how much I liked this autographed picture. So he handed it to me and said “thank you, I never hung this up, maybe at your house it’ll get better treatment”
He is right. It will be put in a frame and hung up before today is over! Thank you!

While I don’t pretend to be an expert on things that I’m not, I can find an avenue and a relative market price for just about anything collectible.
One of the best things about doing consignment is that I have time to go through and do my homework on items. My goal is always to get the best result for anybody who uses me whether to consign, broker a deal, or find them a special card for their collection.
Yesterday I took a ride to hand-deliver a bunch of cards/items for a consignee, as many people are nervous putting valuable stuff in the mail these days.
One of the items peaked the interest of the gentleman who runs the auction house as he is also an avid collector of certain things. So even though I walked in with something that only a few days ago I didn’t really know much about, I dropped off all the other stuff for consignment but I walked out with five figures for an item that just a few days ago we wouldn’t have thought was more was worth more than $2500/$3000.
This is why you consign with people you trust. While obviously I need to cover expenses and make a couple of bucks, I will always get the most I can for those who trust me with their prized possessions. This one was especially satisfying! It’s never happened to me before. Of course we have to wait for the rest of the money, as the items have to be auctioned, but to be able to hand over some money immediately was a fun experience!

What do you collect? It doesn’t matter what you collect, it just matters that you enjoy it. You don’t always have to purchase something for investment/value. Sometimes I pick stuff up that doesn’t have a lot of value just because I think it’s cool. And there are so many things you can get inexpensively if you don’t mind condition much. I picked these coins up from the 60s for an extremely reasonable price. Definitely worth adding a couple of items to my personal collection.
The Baseball? Well, I finally replaced my Doc Gooden baseball that I sold back when I was broke in the 90s. I figured it was about time! Doc will never be in the Hall of Fame but he’s in my “favorites” Hall of Fame. When the New York Mets are playing like they’ve been playing, it’s always good to be able to look at something on the shelf and reflect on awesome memories that have been supplied by sports.

As much as I love going through Baseball Cards, even though I’ve probably seen every single one between 10 and 50 times before, I really do not like to have to tell people that what they have is not very valuable. But, the flipside is, if this is what you grew up collecting, you can still enjoy them for what they are. Youthful memories. Your childhood heroes. Memories of opening the packs and going through them with your family or friends. Memories of sitting down at a table and scouring through your cards with a buddy to do some trades. Low monetary value does not mean low value. Memories are priceless. Our cardboard heroes don’t have to be.

Sometimes I stop at a show and I just pick up random nonsense. I am working on multiple 1975 sets so I need to pick up the keys because I have all the commons. The rest of it, just stuff. Being a cardboard addict is probably one of the most harmless addicts you can be! I do love my off grade stuff!!

When you’re a true collector at heart, sometimes you end up stumbling across something cool that you didn’t know you wanted! While looking for some random autographed Mets cards (it’s amazing how inexpensively you can pick up some autographed cards from legitimate sources) to add to my collection, I came across this. Sometimes when the price is right, your brain doesn’t even attempt to say no! This one goes up on the wall at home.

Back in November a man was referred to me to look at a tiny stack of cards that he had gotten from his grandfather. It was a friend of a friend, so even though it was just a tiny stack of cards I figured why not meet him and take a look. Turns out that one of the only 11 cards he had in that sandwich bag was a Willie Mays rookie card! And it was a nice shape! It’s not often you come across a 1951 Bowman that has great centering and is still in decent shape. And being it was one of the two biggest cards in the set, it was really cool! I thought about buying it for my own collection but I want to make sure that I got him a good price so I suggested that he let me bring it in for grading as I drive in every two months or so and drop off a stack of cards. Well, it graded better than I thought it would and I sold it very easily to another guy who does Shows. Willie currently resides in the showcase of one of the biggest dealers on the East Coast and my client is extremely happy with the envelope of cash that I handed over to him! I do love the wheeling and dealing! It’s almost as fun as the most fun thing about Baseball Cards, which is finding something to add to my own personal collection!

Merry Christmas everybody! I hope Santa delivered what you wanted this year! He delivered a PSA submission back to me just in time for the holidays! Or it might’ve been the FedEx guy. I’m not sure.
Still gearing up to get this business rolling along. Right now I’m just buying and appraising. I haven’t really gotten into the selling phase yet other than brokering an occasional deal here and there.
Here’s hoping everybody enjoys the rest of the holiday season and happy new year to all!

This is an example of the glut of stuff from the late 80s and early 90s that has little to no value. but just because it doesn’t have much monetary value doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any value. It definitely has entertainment value!
I stopped by to see my friends at The Lighthouse Mission in Bellport to drop off the remainder of my Halloween candy and they asked me to take a look at this stuff.
I’ll make a donation to Lighthouse and then I’ll donate most of the stuff too some of the adult homes that I bring things to. The folks at the homes love leafing through this stuff!
So even if you have stuff that you feel is worthless, get it looked at, because “you never know” and then feel free to reach out to me for some of the addresses of places to drop it off at.
By the way Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming, so the Lighthouse Mission will see an increased need for everything from food to clothes to toys to jackets. Please remember them when donating!
