Jenny & James

I’ll keep this as short as I possibly can so as to not completely lose it while I write this… But you already know that’s a difficult task these days. Here goes nothing.

Thank you. You have truly been the best bosses I have ever had the pleasure of working for. Never have I been so happy to show up to work. Never have I felt so supported and taken care of at work. From day one, Thousand Acre has been a safe space to learn, create, and (of course) imbibe. This is a gift I will never forget and I will take it into every job I have from here on out.

Thank you for trusting me to help steer this ship. We’ve dealt with some of the roughest waters imaginable and lived to tell the tale. Pivot after pivot, curveball after curveball, lockdown after lockdown. It’s been a difficult and rewarding challenge. All of us have had a hand in making this place what it became, really. That freedom and trust never went unnoticed.

If anyone else in this town - or industry - has to suffer a loss like we are dealing with, take notes from Jenny & James. The way they’ve handled all of this should be considered the gold standard from now on. 3 weeks notice, severance pay, excellent communication throughout the entire process… That’s how to take good care of your employees in a sad situation like this.

Here’s to new adventures and continued friendship. You can close the bar but you can’t get rid of me that easily. Onesie party at my place soon.

💕🍻

We want to give a HUUUUUGE shout-out to the person responsible for all of our photography these past 2+ years. She is the reason our drinks (and staff) look so damn good on the internet all the time. Thank you, Kris! 💕🍻

Our staff is being paid for the lost shifts 10/8-10/10! We simply are just selling out of cider too quickly.

We love you. Thanks for your support and kind words.

This Friday, join us for an AMAZING show with SeaStar, who are coming all the way from Seattle! Seems fitting that they play one of our last live music sets, seeing as how they were originally one of the first shows we had to cancel way back in the first lockdown. Our time is finally here, SeaStar!

With lumps in our throats and tears welling in our eyes, we announce that Thousand Acre Cider House will be permanently closing on *10/7/21. There really aren’t words for the swirl of pride, exhaustion, gratitude, and sadness we are feeling as this worry we’ve been grappling with turns into written reality. After 19+ months of flurried adaptations, recovery simply isn’t occurring fast enough and the future remains too uncertain for us to continue this dream. Rather than overexplain the incredible financial and emotional distress COVID has brought to our business, we instead implore you to listen and act on our primary concern: Our AMAZING team’s last few weeks and whatever the future may hold for us.

We have a lot of cider to move through and want you to enjoy as much of it as possible from now until *10/7. We WILL be open Wed-Mon during our regularly scheduled hours so our team can slay a final paycheck and we can say our goodbyes to all of our loyal customers, neighbors, and friends. We have also worked with our team to ensure a severance while they navigate landing their next gig. Anyone would be lucky to work with these fine humans and beyond missing serving you, we are going to miss seeing Chris, JeAnna, Eric, and Kiersten more than anything. What a freaking privilege it’s been to be your employer. We only wish the waters weren’t so stormy so we could sail into the sunset we had previously imagined.

Please be kind and patient with us. It’s hard. Really hard.

Discover, Imbibe, Love Cider

Thousand Acre Cider House honors the age-old craft of cider making and imbibing that was core to American life before Prohibition.

Our namesake is a nod to the legend himself, John Chapman - best known as Johnny Appleseed. Known as an eccentric, but devoted conservationist and apple enthusiast, John planted an estate of over 1,000 acres of cider apple trees spanning from West Virginia to Indiana.

His journey West ended short of the Mississippi River and tragically the majority of cider apple trees were burned to the ground during Prohibition to make room for culinary fruit. Cider was not lost forever though. Orchardists and cidermakers across the country quietly kept the tradition alive well after Prohibition.

Inspired by the cidermakers on the front line of reviving cider’s prevalence, we set out to create a space to celebrate craft cider and renew people’s love of the drink. We like to think of Thousand Acre Cider House as Johnny’s legacy continued westward.
