RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK: WHY CHEBA HUT CONTINUES TO RANK AMONG WHATCOM COUNTY’S BEST SANDWICH SHOPS
Finding a restaurant that delivers the same quality every single visit isn’t always easy, especially in today’s economy. Some places have an off day. Others slowly change over time, again, most of the time that’s due to lower quality ingredients due to economic difficulties, and downsizing. More than four years after we first became sort-of-regular customers, Bellingham Old Town CHeBA Hut has done the opposite.
Visit after visit, Sub after tasty sub: the food has been consistently fresh, the service has been amazing and the experience has remained one of the best in Bellingham.
In my opinion, CHeBA Hut serves some of the best sub sandwiches in Whatcom County and easily ranks among my top quality three, but it’s an unwritten rule to never rank those top three!. If you’re visiting for the first time, my NUMBER 1 recommendation is the Kali Mist on garlic herb bread, but they do have the option for Gluten Free bread substitution.
There is honestly nothing else I’ve had that compares to it.
The Kali Mist is loaded with roasted turkey, bacon, pepper jack cheese, avocado, jalapeños, fresh vegetables, pickles, chipotle mayo and Cheba Hut’s house seasoning. Everything inside this sandwich works well with each other, I don’t know what’s inside the house dressing, but I wish they sold it in stores.
During our latest visit, we stopped by while Downtown Sounds was taking place just outside. The restaurant was packed with customers, with lines stretching through the dining room. Even without a downtown event, it’s common to see the restaurant busy throughout the day, which speaks for itself.
One thing we’ve always appreciated is the consistency. We’ve ordered inside the restaurant, called in orders over the phone and placed online pickup orders. Most pickup orders are ready within about 10 to 15 minutes, but this most recent visit, but our food was ready in roughly five minutes.
If you’re ordering to go, we highly recommend using the Cheba Hut app or website. Once you arrive, just walk to the pickup counter, tell them the name on the order and they’ll hand it right over.
The staff has always been awesome,, whether we’re dining in or picking up food, and we’ve honestly never had a bad experience.. 'they the homies!, they always go above and beyond and always provide nothing short of great service, and deliver quality food.
While the restaurant is known for its 420-inspired theme, it’s exactly that—a theme. Nothing on the menu is infused with cannabis. Instead, the restaurant embraces a laid-back down-to-earth atmosphere with colorful artwork, pop culture-murals and references to artists and pop culture icons like Snoop Dogg and The Notorious B.I.G., giving the dining area a fun early-2000s vibe and even modern pop references and stickers displayed.
Since opening in Bellingham, the restaurant has also expanded by adding a full bar, giving adults a large selection of alcoholic beverages to choose from while still offering plenty of seating for everyone else.
The menu itself is enormous. Whether you’re looking for turkey, roast beef, chicken, Italian meats, meatballs, vegetarian options or even a custom-built sandwich, there’s something for almost everyone. Popular choices include the White Widow, Midwest Best, AK-47, Apollo 13, La Canna, Power Plant and Magic Mushroom, just to name a few.
Cheba Hut also offers salads, garlic cheese bread, pretzel nuggets, brownies, cookies, Krispy bars, Goo Balls, nachos and one of the more unique drink selections around, including Kool-Aid on tap alongside fountain drinks and energy beverages.
Cheba Hut still has the Best of Bellingham Metro award we presented to the restaurant in 2022 on display inside. That year, readers selected Cheba Hut for Best Sub Sandwich in Whatcom County and Best Customer Service in Whatcom County.
Located at 306 W. Holly St. in Bellingham’s Old Town neighborhood, Cheba Hut occupies the former Rocket Donuts building, where the iconic rocket still stands outside. Over the past few years, it has easily become a downtown institution and one of the very best sandwich shops in the city.
If you’ve never had it, start with the Kali Mist on garlic herb bread. It’s still my all time favorite sandwiches on the menu and, in my opinion, one of the best sandwiches you’ll find anywhere in Whatcom County.
This marks the first installment of Bellingham Metro News’ Restaurant of the Week series, and it’s hard to think of a better place to kick it off. We have a few other sub-sandwich shops and other restaurants we want to review in the future.
