I’m not letting you wait whole week for this one. Our Mystery Wine this week was 2022 Saget la Perriere “L’Origine’ Blanc Fumé de Pouilly aka. Sauvignon Blanc from Loire Valley in France. Light and zippy, with a bit of flinty minerality (that’s what ‘fumé’ references to), the wine is dry, has high acidity, medium alcohol and medium body. No new oak was used for aging here. It’s driven by a bit of green notes of grass, asparagus and gooseberries with strong bitter grapefruit flavors, green apple and pear. At the same time it shows aroma and flavor of honey which may suggest presence of botrytis cinerea (aka. Noble rot) that produces this kind of flavor. Dry wines from 2022 vintage were not particularly affected by this rot since the growing season in Loire Valley was dry but I think a little bit made its way to this wine making it very pleasant and interesting. Besides that, the fruit is not very ripe and there are green herbal notes. Great job everyone on this one and come see us next Wednesday and Thursday to try your skills on another Mystery Wine. Today is Saturday and we’re open 12pm-12am.
