Our Mystery Wine last week was 2020 François Carillon Pinot Noir from Côte d’Or in Burgundy. 2020 vintage was rather warm in that usually cool climate region which resulted in darker, more powerful wine that it had usually been. Nevertheless, the wine has a very classic structure with medium tannins, medium plus acidity and alcohol isn’t too elevated despite the warmer weather and the wine has medium body. There are leading flavors of inorganic earth, decomposing leaves, mushrooms and a bit of peppery spice which may be contributed to a light use of oak. The fruit is red and black cherry, strawberry and rhubarb. The wine has a very nice savory finish and it’s well balanced. Thank you all for participating and today and tomorrow we have another red Mystery Wine for you. It’s Wednesday and we’re open 4pm-10pm.

Grafted is going to be 5 years old in July 🥳 and we have a treat for you! Our wine tasting event on Tuesday, July 7 at 6.30pm is going to be led by my amazing friend, Master Sommelier and one of the world’s best somms, Mark Guillaudeu. Mark will present you with seven wines chosen by him based on his taste and interests. The wines will be accompanied by homemade small plates. The tickets are $140 per person and $40 of that amount will go to your wine purchase after the event. Please, email me if you’re interested at [email protected] . And here is Mark’s short bio:

Mark Guillaudeu began his career in hospitality after graduate school studying Tibetan Buddhism and quickly made his way from Washington, DC to San Francisco and the two Michelin-starred Commis.  He earned his WSET Diploma in 2016 and in 2019 was named one of Food & Wine Magazine’s ‘Best New Sommeliers’ as he entered the MW program and set his sights on the Meilleur Sommelier du Monde title.  He won the right to represent the USA in international competition in the “Best Sommelier USA” event in June of 2022 and in February of 2023 became the first American to breach the semi-finals of the grueling World Championship.  That September he earned his Master Sommelier Diploma and competed to re-earn his “Best Sommelier USA” title in August of 2024, becoming the first American candidate to win the title more than once and in February of 2025 the first American to make the finals at the Best Sommelier of the Americas competition, placing second.  Mark joined the team at three Michelin-starred, 2017 Best Restaurant in the World Eleven Madison Park in May of 2024 and delights in sharing his joy, love, and knowledge of wine with his guests and his team. Mark has a passion for the wines of Austria and Spain; sake, and other savory ferments the world over.
Cheers and hope to see you there.

Our Mystery Wine this week was 2024 Esterhazy Grüner Veltliner from Burgenland region of Austria. The wine doesn’t have very strong aromatics but we can find some green apple, stone fruit, vegetal note and white pepper typical to this grape and style. Very light on the palate. The fruit is quite tart and refreshing. Acidity is medium although emphasized by the phenolic bitterness that Grüner is known for. Alcohol is medium as well which makes this wine a great summer sipper. Wiener schnitzel wouldn’t mind that pairing either. As always thank you to all who participated and join us next Wednesday and Thursday for another blind tasting. Cheers!

Today is Thursday and we’re open 4pm-10pm.

Last week’s Mystery Wine was 2024 Domaine Pichon Vouvray aka. Chenin Blanc from Loire Valley in France. This wine has a lot of orchard fruit flavors with honey suckle and a bit of stony minerality. It is off-dry and a bit of residual sugar masks wine’s high acidity. Still, the fruit on the palate is not very ripe suggesting cooler climate area. Good job to all who participated. Today is a hot one so we’re going to have another white wine for you to blind taste. It’s Wednesday and we’re open 4pm-10pm.
