Holland Theatre

Holland Theatre Built in 1931, the beautifully restored Holland Theatre is a nonprofit performing arts center.

Holland Theatre opened in 1931 and is the nation’s only atmospheric theater featuring 17th century Dutch architecture. The structure had fallen into disrepair in the 1990s after being converted into a cineplex and was saved from demolition when local teacher Kris Swisher and her students took an interest in the structure. Buoyed by community support and government and private grants – including support from The Jeffris Family Foundation – the theater’s multimillion-dollar restoration helped return the space to a vibrant performing arts theater. The Holland Theatre in downtown Bellefontaine has once again become the vibrant heart of its community. Today, this beautifully restored National Register landmark hosts live theatre productions, concerts, movies, community events, and sold-out performances that draw visitors from across Ohio and neighboring states. Operated by Logan County Landmark Preservation, the theatre is home to a local production company presenting five live shows each year and continues to serve as a powerful economic driver for downtown, bringing people to local restaurants, shops, and hotels.
When the Holland opened in 1931, it was unlike any other theatre in Ohio. Designed by Dutch-born architect Peter Hulskin, it featured an elaborate Dutch-themed interior complete with windmills, tulips, village scenes, and stork murals, along with the largest movie screen in the state. After decades of entertaining generations of families, the theatre fell into disrepair and closed, its future uncertain.
Its revival is one of Ohio's great preservation success stories. Sparked by the determination of local students in 1989, volunteers, donors, grant partners, and community leaders came together to save the building. Over the following decades, countless volunteer hours, major fundraising efforts, and public and private investments restored the theatre to its original grandeur. Support from organizations including the Ohio Arts Council, the Jeffris Foundation, Honda of America, and even a fundraising appearance by comedian Dave Chappelle helped make the restoration possible.
Today, the Holland Theatre stands as a shining example of how historic preservation can strengthen a community. More than a restored building, it is an anchor for downtown Bellefontaine, a source of community pride, and a place where new memories are created every week.
Do you know a historic building that has been brought back to life? We encourage you to submit it to Heritage Ohio's 250 Buildings, 250 Stories initiative and help us celebrate Ohio's remarkable preservation success stories.
