Many people believe that Captain Morgan was a pirate when actually he was a privateer. A pirate is an outlaw who steals for personal gain, while a privateer is legally authorized by a government to attack enemy ships during wartime.

Sir Henry Morgan, from his base in Port Royal, Jamaica, and those under his command, raided settlements and shipping on the Spanish Main, from which he profited. With the prize money and plunder from these raids, Morgan purchased three large sugar plantations in Jamaica. Later he became the Governor of Jamaica.
