Yesterday, my father meticulously arranged our Fallen Soldier Table — a solemn tribute honoring the brave men and women of the United States military who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as those who remain missing in service to our nation. Every item placed on this table carries a powerful meaning and serves as a symbol of our enduring respect, gratitude, and remembrance.

• The table is round, symbolizing our everlasting concern for our fallen and missing service members.
• The white tablecloth represents the purity of their motives when answering the call to serve.
• The single red rose reminds us of the lives of each of our fallen, and of the loved ones and friends who miss them every single day.
• The vase, tied with a red ribbon, symbolizes our continued determination to honor our fallen and never stop seeking those still missing.
• The slice of lemon on the plate reminds us of the bitter fate of those who will never return.
• The pinch of salt represents the tears shed by the families and friends of those who have fallen or remain unaccounted for.
• The lighted candle reflects the light of hope for their return — alive or at peace.
• The inverted glass symbolizes their inability to share a toast with us.
• The empty chair serves as a solemn reminder of the seat that remains forever unclaimed at the table.
