in 1959, John Unitas cleaned up in the awards department He won the trifecta ... Bert Bell, A.P. & U.P.I. Player of the year awards. I believe that the car comes with the A.P. award. If so, this nifty little Corvette was traded back in for a station wagon for his wife, Dorothy. In 1964, when he repeated the feat, John kept the Corvette for himself.

Local author, Shelly Howell has penned her newest collection of classic Baltimore recipes, Dining Down Memory Lane, Volume II. Shelly digs up four-star recipes from various sources and then recreates the dish to be sure the dish matches the one served as she remembered. I can only imagine how much works goes into this process, since restaurants are not known for recording, let alone preserving and archiving their recipes. Occasionally she finds someone like me who was a 21-year old manager that had been working in a restaurant from his days as a 16-year old dishwasher. Facebook makes it much easier to connect with people from the pre-internet world.
Opening her books brings a flood of memories. After realizing that managing restaurants might not be a good career. I went into selling beer, wine, and alcohol to restaurants when I was 29 years old. When I read about Rudy’s' 2900, I think about the story of Rudy Paul escaping from East Germany by breeching the "Iron Curtain" under a hail of bullets. Then comes the place where the baby boomers’ parents would get carry-out from Jimmy Wu's, a real treat. The House of Welsh was within walking distance of the Sunpapers on Calvert Street. I imagine a noire movie set that served affordable food. I could go on and on.
Shelly provides bakery recipes from the great Baltimore bakeries like Silbers, Rice’s, Doebereiner’s, Mrs. Desserts, and Hutzler’s Baking enthusiasts can have a blast.
A real treat would be to gift this collection along with Volume I and the history of Baltimore dining turns into a panorama.

“The Arm”

“The Arm” was the nickname for Johnny Unitas’ Golden Arm Restaurant. The Golden Arm was a restaurant in Towson, MD owned by former Baltimore Colts Johnny Unitas and Bobby Boyd. The restaurant opened in 1968 and closed in 1994 when the Giant grocery store purchased all of the stores in the strip center and expanded, thus doubling their size. Bobby Boyd sold his share of the restaurant to a favorite local character, Jack Kahl. Jack added some energy to the restaurant and business seemed to perk up. Jack and John sold the restaurant to Bill Rau. Bill was a real restaurant person and once again, some new energy was added to the restaurant, now called simply The Golden Arm.The move by the Giant was not welcomed by Bill. He was pleased with the way things were going. But he found a suitable new home. Patrick’s Restaurant was a freshly remodeled restaurant and bar in the Cranbrook Shopping Center. Bill bought Patrick’s and moved all of the favorite murals, artifacts, and fixtures from 6354 York Road to the new digs at 550 Cranbrook Road in Cockeysville. Many of the employees that worked for Ron Marshall made the jump to their new location. (to be continued)
