Benito Juárez falleciĂł hace más de un siglo y medio, un dĂa como hoy, 18 de julio de 1872, en el Palacio Nacional de la Ciudad de MĂ©xico. TenĂa 66 años al momento de su muerte, la cual ocurriĂł dĂas despuĂ©s de haber sufrido un infarto el 8 de julio. Sus restos descansan en el PanteĂłn de San Fernando, en la Ciudad de MĂ©xico, junto a los de su esposa, Margarita Maza de Juárez, y sus cinco hijos.
Juárez fue el primer presidente indĂgena de MĂ©xico elegido democráticamente y ocupĂł el cargo de vigesimosexto presidente del paĂs durante 14 años.
Su legado es extraordinario y el hecho de que aĂşn se le recuerde hoy en dĂa asĂ lo demuestra.
Cuatro dĂ©cadas despuĂ©s de la muerte de Juárez, y durante la presidencia de Porfirio DĂaz, miembros de la comunidad mexicana del área de Bakersfield decidieron adoptar el legado de Benito Juárez para nombrar a nuestra propia sociedad mutualista, la Sociedad Juárez Mutualista Mexicana, que se fundo el 25 de diciembre del ano 1910 en Bakersfield.
Para muchos, la vida adquiere un significado especial tras la muerte, dependiendo de cĂłmo vivieron y de lo que lograron y sacrificaron en vida. Benito Juárez alcanzĂł grandes logros durante su existencia: sobreviviĂł a una guerra civil y a la intervenciĂłn francesa, gobernĂł desde el exilio y soportĂł la pĂ©rdida de cuatro hijos, entre otros desafĂos y victorias, por supuesto; solo que no alcanzo de imaginar una pĂ©rdida mayor para un padre que la de una hija/o.
Debido a crisis internas violentas, guerras e intervenciones, el gobierno de Juárez no contĂł con los medios financieros ni legislativos para aprobar un presupuesto nacional hasta su duodĂ©cimo año en el cargo; dicho presupuesto incluĂa, por primera vez, inversiones en educaciĂłn pĂşblica e infraestructura de comunicaciones. Esto es un testamento del sacrificio y resiliencia de Juarez de dejar Mexico en mejores condiciones.
Concluyo esta breve reflexiĂłn, en el 154.Âş aniversario del fallecimiento de don Benito Juárez, invitándoles a considerar quĂ© aspectos de su figura es importante destacar y, tal vez, tambiĂ©n sirve de reflexionar personalmente sobre quĂ© desean lograr antes de que llegue su propio momento y cĂłmo les gustarĂa ser recordados.

Benito Juarez died over a century and half ago on this day, July 18, 1872, in Mexico City’s national palace. He was 66 years old at the time of his death. He died days after experiencing a heart attack on the 8th of July. He is buried in the San Fernando Cemetery in Mexico City along with his wife Margarita Maza de Juarez and their five children.
Juarez was the first democratically elected indigenous president of Mexico who served for 14 years in office as the 26th president of Mexico.
His legacy is extraordinary. The fact that he still remembered to this day proves this.
Four decades after Juarez’s death and during the presidency of Porfirio Diaz, members from the Mexican community in the Bakersfield area thought to embrace the legacy of Benito Juarez as the namesake of our very own mutual aid society better known as Sociedad Juarez Mutualista Mexicana, established in Bakersfield on Christmas day in 1910.
For many, life acquires distinguished meaning after death depending how they lived and what they may have accomplished and sacrificed in life. Benito Juarez achieved so much during his lifetime surviving a Civil War, French intervention, administering as president while in exile, and enduring the loss of four children, among other challenges and victories of course, but I cannot fathom a greater loss for a parent than their child.
Due to internal violent crisis, war, and intervention, Juarez’s government did not have the financial and legislative means to approve a national budget until his 12th year in office, which included for the first time investments in public education and communication infrastructure. This is significant testament of Juarez’s resilience and sacrifice for a better Mexico.
I close this brief reflection on the 154th anniversary of don Benito Juarez’s death asking you to consider what is important to emphasize about him and perhaps even to personally consider what you seek to accomplish before your time comes and how you would like to be remembered.
