Remembering Sunnyland Slim on his heavenly birthday today. Sunnyland changed the course of Austin music history. When the genius Chicago blues pianist visited Antone’s in its 3rd week of operation, he stayed in town for a full week.

He barbecued with Clifford and his friends, gave them advice, and played four nights with Big Walter Horton from July 30-August 2, 1975.

When he returned to Chicago, he told everyone he knew: there’s a club in Austin you need to play. You know the rest.

Antone’s is an iconic blues venue located in downtown Austin, Texas where B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Ray Charles, James Brown, and local talent like Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Bob Schneider, Gary Clark Jr., and others have performed.

At this particular time ladies and gentlemen, it gives us great pleasure to present to some and introduce to others, Mr. Allen “Sugar Bear” Black.

Please join us in wishing Sugar Bear, the club’s longtime emcee, a happy heavenly birthday.

Sugar Bear walked into the first Antone’s location to promote Johnnie Taylor in the mid 70s, and he never left. He was a dedicated team member for the next three decades and could be found introducing the bands most nights.

His presence is missed dearly at the club, but our hearts are filled every time his daughter Denise comes to visit.
