To all our many customers & friends we’ve made over the last 29 years it is sad to say that We have decided to close & sell EL Mercado Uptown to allow my partner Gerald Stone and I to spend more time with our family’s, including my wife, three children and “growing brood” of grandchildren. The global pandemic catalyzed a shift in priorities for many of us, and spending time with family now comes first in this next phase of my life and career.
There is little doubt we have faced a truly unprecedented situation. The global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has affected families, businesses, communities, and the way of life for people around the world. Our hearts go out to anyone who’s been impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly. Our thoughts are especially with those we loved & lost, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences. At EL Mercado Uptown, we have focused on the health and safety of our employees, families, customers and communities, while still maintaining business with a quality product and stellar service continuously. More than 250,000 bars and restaurants in the nation have closed forever due to the pandemic and the restaurant business will never be the same! We’ve had labor shortages that have not allow us to open up fully, product shortages, higher food cost, higher labor cost, higher property taxes & then a second wave of the virus in late December thru January dealt us another blow to our industry and now we have a war that is threating freedom and lose of innocent lives.
I plan to continue contributing to the hospitality industry, to which I’ve dedicated my 37-year career, to spend more time with my family and to do some community work to give back to this city that I love & has been my home my whole life. The other two EL Mercado Restaurant locations (the original EL Mercado Restaurant South at 1302 south first & EL Mercado Restaurant North at 7414 Burnet Rd.) & The Git Out Bar & Kitchen at 4930 Congress Ave c-304. will continue on.
I want to thank all our great customers for a fun 29 years here and to my loyal and AWESOME staff who will be moving to our other stores! Our last day at Lavaca will be Monday March 21st so come by and say goodbye for the very last time!
