Brush Creek Brewing Company

Brush Creek Brewing Company Come Thirsty. Be Fed. It’s all my mom’s fault. She allowed me to have a TV in my room. After 10pm, Cheers! Beer and pizza…but that still wasn’t the whole dream.
(240)

played back-to-back and I loved the place “where everybody knows your name”. I think deep down I wanted to be Sam Malone with my own cast of characters to serve and share life with. Fast forward a decade or so: I am at a friend’s backyard birthday party and his wife presents him with a home brewery kit. “You can make beer at home?!?” I thought. I was under the impression that beer was made by NASA

scientists with complex equipment, not that it was something that could be done at home! My mind was captivated and I soon made what would be my first business investment: a used homebrew kit for $75. I made my first batch of beer, shared it with friends…and was hooked. I subscribed to magazines and read books about beer, brewing, and business, and started going on every brewery tour around: asking questions of head brewers and soaking in everything I could about this newfound frontier of beer craftmanship. In 2012, an opportunity arose for my family to live the dream I’d had since childhood: moving to Brush Creek Ranch in Holt County, Nebraska. When we moved, I brought a love of making beer, the wealth of information gathered from craft brewery tours, a brewing set-up (which had expanded considerably from that original kit), and a dream that had been growing since about my third small batch of beer: to one day open a brewpub—my very own Cheers! Along the way, I discovered making beer—while fun—wasn’t actually what the dream was about…If I am going to pour someone a hand-crafted beverage, I thought, I should offer more...there is something about the lightly charred crust of an artisan style pizza being pulled from a brick oven that makes my mouth water. Being a relational creature, I enjoy meeting new friends, engaging in conversation, learning what makes others tick, and hearing what people are passionate about. The dream was about connection…

In John, chapter 4, Jesus sat down at a well. A woman arrived to draw water and Jesus asked her for a drink. United by a common human condition—the need to quench thirst—they engaged in life-changing dialogue. After encountering Jesus, the woman left the well filled with life: a fullness she had never experienced before. And now, here you are: at The Well, Home of Brush Creek Brewing Company. It is our desire that you leave not just full, but filled. Our goal is to offer an environment that fosters life-giving conversation.

The next chapter is being written…

Did you know that while most people call us Brush Creek Brewing Company, the name of our humble pub is actually The Well? No? Well, “The Well” is named specifically after John chapter 4 where Jesus meets with the Samaritan woman at a physical well for drawing water. In those days, Samaritans were treated as second class citizens to the Jewish people. To be seen or to engage in dialogue with a Samaritan as a Jew was considered shameful and below the piety of the chosen people. But Jesus, being Jesus, didn’t much care for labels. His mission was to rescue people, often those forgotten and cast aside in this world. And so, at the well, these two strangers unite around a common need for a drink of water. But the woman who came to refresh her body with water, actually walked away with new life after encountering Jesus.

Our “Well” was crafted to be a place where all are welcome, regardless of social status, heritage, race or creed. Our hope was that people would leave our pub with more life than they came in with.

Many of you know my family’s next chapter in our story, but many do not. Why would we close down a successful and profitable business that’s been a blessing to our town, our guests, and my family? The answer, while straightforward, is also a bit paradoxical. My family is relocating to Thailand to join staff with ZOE International, a Christian missions organization committed to ending child trafficking. And guess what “zoe” means? It’s a Greek word, and it means “life!” How awesome is that?! ZOE International’s mission is to reach every person with the gospel of Jesus Christ and rescue every child from trafficking and exploitation, restoring the life stolen from them.

While it seems totally illogical to give up on a dream of crafting a successful business in a perfect little town to move into the unknown on the opposite side of the planet with a new language and culture, the reality is we’re just trading one way of sharing life with folks for another. We can think of no better mission than to help rescue kids from trafficking and exploitation, and introduce them to the life Jesus offers.

We’ve spent the last several months traveling to many states, churches, small groups, and bible studies talking about this new adventure and encouraging others to join us. You all have been wonderfully supportive of our pub, maybe now you might consider supporting us as we join ZOE International to rescue kids and show them the life Jesus desires.

Below is a presentation we shared this week, telling the amazing story God has written for us starting back when Alisha was just a kid. We’d love you to listen in on our story.
