Sad to report that Rail Malo of the Mavericks has passed away at 60.
He appeared twice at CBBF.
He asked me the night before his 1st time there if we would be cancelling due to forecast rain storms. He didn't believe me when I said no. But he was so impressed that the attendees stayed through it saying " People at this festival are crazy.. In a good way!"
RIP Raul.

Just two days after The Mavericks celebrated co-founder and vocalist Raul Malo — and the band's 35-year legacy — with a concert, "Dance the Night Away” at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, comes the heartbreaking news of Raul's passing yesterday, at the age of 60, of cancer.

In a statement on the band's social media, The Mavericks wrote: "Anyone with the pleasure of being in Raul’s orbit knew that he was a force of human nature, with an infectious energy. Over a career of more than three decades entertaining millions around the globe, his towering creative contributions and unrivaled, generational talent created the kind of multicultural American music reaching far beyond America itself."

Here at WFUV, we've been lucky, time and time again, to experience Raul and The Mavericks' spirit and songwriting, including Raul's home session for FUV live during the thick of the pandemic in 2020.

We grieve with the Mavericks, Malo's family and friends, and the fans who loved Raul Malo. Thank you, Raul, for everything.

"I heard you say to me
There were no guarantees
And that the world could make you cry."

RIP Steve Cropper. A legend.
Sarah and I had the honor of meeting him when he played the Blues Festival with Booker T and Donald "Duck" Dunn.

A few personal memories from the Blues Festival, which I really miss.

On November 25th we lost another great friend, both personally and of CBBF.
Pat Furgurson was a huge fan of the festival and, as a reporter of the Capital newspaper in Annapolis, gave us a ton of press. He will be sorely missed.

If only.....We miss you.

Larry Griffin was instrumental in the success of CBBF. He will not only be missed by us, but by the City of Annapolis where he played an important role in providing help to those who had fallen through the cracks of society. If you can't attend the Celebration of Life on Feb. 9th, consider a small monetary gift to We Care and Friends so that his widow, Rachael, can continue the mission and dream of Larry..

Some bad news. A great friend and a hero in the Annapolis community, Larry Griffin, passed away today. Larry was an integral part of the success of CBBF.
As the founder of We Care and Friends, he was considered the guardian angel of Annapolis.
Our sincere condolences to Rachael, his wife, and family and friends. Miss you my brother.

Seems like I should be heading to Sandy Point, with a dozen or so volunteers, to start building a small city with a big stage.
Suffering serious Blues Festival withdrawal.
We will miss everyone!
